The Shortwave Report 10/11/19 Listen Globally!
Dear Radio Friend, This week's show features stories from NHK Japan, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Deutsche-Welle http://www.outfarpress.com/swr191011.mp3 From JAPAN- On Monday half of the subway stations in Hong Kong were out of order after being vandalized by protestors over the weekend. During the week more people were arrested for allegedly wearing masks during demonstrations, the government wants schools to release names of students who protested or shouted slogans, and there is a threat of freezing citizens bank accounts. A UN report expressed grave concern over US airstrikes in Afghanistan last May that resulted in dozens more civilian deaths which the US denies. From SPAIN- Alison Hughes begins with an in-depth report on the protests in Ecuador. 20,000 indigenous citizens arrived in the capital to continue the week long strikes against the government of Lenin Moreno. The president signed a loan deal from the IMF which demanded a series of austerity measures against public services, new draconian labor laws, and rejection of fuel subsidies which caused prices to more than double. Moreno declared a state of emergency, set the military to attack the people, and moved the government headquarters to the coast where he has military protection. He accused the former president Correa and Venezuelan president Maduro of attempting a coup. Seven Latin American countries under right-wing rule have come out in support of Moreno- US lawmakers joined in as well. Alison then moves on to an update on the situation in Syria where Turkish forces have begun airstrikes on Syrian-Kurdish led military bases. The US has withdrawn troops, Russia has recommended dialogue between Syria and Turkey. Alison reads excerpts from an analysis of Trump's puzzling withdrawal from Syria, written by a former Indian diplomat and one time ambassador to Turkey. From GERMANY- Brief reports on protests by French farmers, the deadly attacks on Iraqi protestors, and Haitian protestors demanding the ouster of their president. Then a report on the actions of Extinction Rebellion blocking major roads in Germany, demanding that the government tell the truth about the climate crisis. People are protesting under the Extinction Rebellion banner around the world.
