Hundreds protest at White House against Dakota Access Pipeline easement

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 02/08/2017 - 19:14

On the 8th of February, hundreds of water protectors showed up at an emergency protest at the White House in response to the US Army Corps of Engineers decision to offer a 30 year easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline. Similar protests were held all over Turtle Island.

Update Standing Rock Feb 8:Permit approved 6PM EST, drilling started 15 min later. Indigenous Environmental Network warns "Police violence seems inevitable and mass casualties are very likely. The only way to keep people safe is to do the EIS. If not, any blood spilled is on Trump’s hands and the hands of the Corps. "

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 02/07/2017 - 00:20

On the 6th of February, opponents of Trump's Secretary of Education nominee Betsy Devos gathered in Upper Senate Park. Inside, the Senate was split 50-50, meaning Mike Pence would get to cast the time-breaker favoring confirmation and the GOP kept the Senate in session. vowing to continue night and day. In the end, VP Mike Pence rammed the nomination through with his tiebreaker vote.

NoDAPL protest at Citibank draws strong crowd, many cops

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 02/06/2017 - 23:47

Update Feb 7: US Army Corps of Engineers scraps EIS, announces final easement and permt for the pipeline will be granted. Water protectors, many of them veterans, heading back to Standing Rock despite dangerous cops and weather conditions. Strong hearts to the front!

On the 6th of February, perhaps ten times as many people showed up for a NoDAPL protest at a Dupont Circle area Citibank as would have last Fall. Also different was the police response: cops strategically positioned in locations nearly surrounding the crowd as though waiting for more cops and an order to kettle the protest. The divestment campaign is starting to bite: days ago Seattle divested $3 billion from Well Fargo due to their investments in the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Protests in Annapolis demand fracking ban not Muslim ban

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 02/01/2017 - 14:50

On the first of February, two related protests took place in Annapolis as Governor Hogan gave the state equivalent of the State of the Union speech. The first was a rally outside demanding that MD ban gas fracking outright, making the current moratorium permanent. In addition, a small crew planned to set up a banner inside demanding that Gov Hogan take a stand against Trump's travel and refugee ban on Muslims. They got in, found the action impossible, and set up the banner outside as delegates left

Trump's Muslim roundups begin in spite of delayed executive order, emergency protests held in DC and NYC

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 01/25/2017 - 18:33

SURG-DC is reporting that arrests and deportations of US Muslims have already started. Visas are being revoked without warning. At any time Trump is expected to issue an executive order forbidding immigration by most or all Muslims, but he has not signed it yet. He already signed a decree (this is how he rules) to build a wall on the Mexica border. With the formal ban on Muslim immigrations still expected and roundups already starting, an emergency protest was held in DC on 15th st near the White House.

A View From the Rear: A Reportback From the Back of the Black Bloc

Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 01/25/2017 - 15:13

For various personal reasons I was unwilling to risk arrest at the J20 inaugural festivities, but I couldn't stand to miss the action altogether. I compromised by trailing in the wake of the black bloc march, far enough behind to be safe, but close enough to make some pertinent observations.

Class-action lawsuit over the mistreatment of inauguration protesters

Submitted by repost on Wed, 01/25/2017 - 12:06

A lawyer who was providing legal support to Inauguration Day protesters in Washington sued police Friday over claims the authorities responded disproportionately with mass arrests, pepper spray and batons in response to the unrest that swept across downtown. The lawsuit was filed in Washington federal district court just hours after President Donald Trump took the oath of office. The inaugural ceremony kicked off a wave of protests and vandalism across downtown Washington.

Metropolitan Police Department and U.S. Park Police officers, according to the lawsuit, surrounded a crowd near 12th and L streets and made arrests “without warning and without any dispersal order.” Benjamin Christopher Carraway, a Colorado criminal defense attorney, was the named plaintiff in the class action. The suit was filed on behalf of protesters, attorneys, legal observers, journalists and medics who, according to the complaint, were “subjected to this outrageous conduct by the defendants for no legitimate law enforcement reason.”

Trump's Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipeline executive orders draw big emergency protest

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 01/24/2017 - 22:50

On the 24th of January, "Fuhrer" Donald Trump signed executive orders to restart the Keystone XL approval process and attempt to ram through the Dakota Access Pipeline. At 5PM, with just 4 hours notice, protesters started gathering at the White House to denounce this reckless decision. What began at 5PM with hundreds swelled by nightfall to what several Twitter posters estimated as more than 1,500 protesters.
