Code Pink protests for Gaza at SecState Kerry's home

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 07/29/2014 - 18:47

At 6PM on the afternoon of July 29, US Secretary of State Kerry received a home visit protest from Code Pink, demanding he "stand strong against Netanyahu." US support makes Israel's increasingly deadly campaign against Gaza, which has included bombing or shelling at least one hospital and a UN-run school possible. Recent news footage from Gaza resembles bombed-out Berlin in 1945. Secretary of State Kerry and President Barrack Obama have the power to stop this war, probably Israel would pull out to avoid a cutoff of aid from the US.

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 07/29/2014 - 18:37

On the 29th of June, CCAN, 350.org and other pro-Earth organizations held a rally outside the EPA as a hearing on the proposed power plant CO2 emission rule gut under way. Shortly after the rally, Climate First! activists arrived at the US Chamber of Commerce saying their climate change denial is "bad for the bottom line" before also marching to the EPA, where supporters stayed put all day as the hearing continued.

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 07/28/2014 - 17:23

On the 28th of July, immigrants, many of them students who received legal status because they were brought into the US as young children, showed up in front of the White House. They demanded that Obama "go big" and act unilaterally to provide legal status for their parents by executive action, thus bypassing GOP obstruction. Also present were many GLBT immigrants demanding similar relief for their partners or themselves.

Christian Zionist convention draws Gaza invasion protest

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 07/21/2014 - 22:52

On the 21st of July, pro-Palestine protesters showed up outside the Christians United For Israel convention in the DC Convention Center. This group is composed of Fundamentalist Christians, some of whom believe the job of Israel is to start the war of Armageddeon against their neighbors, then to either convert to Christianity or be killed after the Second Coming. I received reports today of more attendees saying Palestinian children deserve to die, though none of the attendees admitted publicly to believing Jewish people are supposed to be next to die unless they convert at the Apocalypse.

Gas export protesters blockade FERC, 24 arrests

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 07/14/2014 - 15:28

Shortly before 8AM on the 14th of July, activists opposing fracking and LNG export out of Cove Point or anywhere else blockaded all doors into FERC's headquarters. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or FERC is suspected of being ready to rubber-stamp permits for gas export facility construction at Cove Point in Calvert County, MD. Cops helped FERC employees and bureaucrats push through lines of protesters, appearing at one point to use a pain hold to force a protester to let go of another. The blockades remained in place until about 10AM, at which point 24 activists were arrested.

July 4th Hemp/Cannabis parade runs into "freedom fence" and checkpoints

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 07/04/2014 - 19:23

On the 4th of July, the annual Hemp/Cannabis legalization march had to pass through the Mall bag search checkpoints, at least one arrest was reported just past the checkpoints. Some others refused to enter the concert area due to the checkpoints. Those checkpoints are probably why this march and concert no longer draws the thousands it used to before George W Bush brought public event checkpoints to DC.
