Protesters object as Supreme Court permits Hobby lobby to refuse contraceptive coverage

Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 06/30/2014 - 16:47

In a 5-4 split decision on the 30th of June, the US Supreme Court once again ruled that corporations are people, this time granting them religious freedom to discriminate against women who use birth control in the notorious Hobby Lobby case.

As the Supreme Court ruled in favor of religious bigotry and corporate personhood, protesters outside showed their disapproval with signs saying things like "my uterus is not on payroll," and "My health care is not your hobby," and "keep your rosaries off my ovaries.

On the 26th of June, a huge, mostly white crowd gathered in Dupont Circle to watch the US team lose to Germany in the World Cup. These Eviction Games were made possible by tens of thousands of evictions of favela residents in Rio and tens of thousands more in the rest of the country. The next Eviction Games in Brazil are the Olympics, and here in DC the rich want both the Olympics in 2024 and the evictions.

On the 21st of June, antiwar protesters showed up at the White House for the 2nd time in 6 days, demanding that Obama cancel plans new US intervention in Iraq. Performance Bicycle refusing to sell bikes or bike frames to buyers without ID

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 06/19/2014 - 15:57

Performance Bicycle is a national chain with outlets in the DC area in Montgomery County, MD. They tell me they will not sell complete bikes or frames to people unwilling to present identification. Their advice was to buy used when I asked them where they refer potential customers without drivers licenses or ID.

When I contacted City Bikes, by comparison, they said ID was only required for test rides, where it would be needed to find the rider if the bike was stolen.

Starbucks CEO confronted by former barista over low wages at DC event

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 06/19/2014 - 13:45

Remember Starbucks, the corporation made famous among global justice activists by Seattle? Well, Starbucks exploits workers in 2014 like they did in 1999, and former employee Sam Dukore caught CEO Howard Schultz at a DC event where Starbucks was promoting online classes.

Drone protest closes CIA gate as renewed US War in Iraq looms

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 06/14/2014 - 17:21

On the 14th of June, antiwar protesters showed up at the CIA's Dolly Madison Ave entrance as drone flights over Iraq began anew. As usual, the CIA shut down the entrance due to the presence of the protesters. They have been there the second Saturday of every month since November 2012 demanding an end to the use of armed drones for assasination and bombing. Now, Obama is making menacing speeches about returning to combat in Iraq, but somehow doing it without ground troops.

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 06/11/2014 - 14:43

On the 9th of June, the Washington Post reported that DC is again seeking to host the Summer Olympics, this time in 2024. The bid to host the 2012 Olympics was defeated after protesters disrupted an Olympic Selection Committee event with a smoke flare and heckled the Committee at the grand reopening of the Wilson Building the next day.

Dead fish for HRC, super soakers for Westboro at Pride Parade

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 06/08/2014 - 13:03

The Capitol Pride Parade on June 7, 2014 was the least corporate Pride parade I have seen in many years. In addition, the so-called "Human Rights Campaign" was held accountable for throwing non-assimilationists and especially trans folks under the bus by activists who threw nasty dead fish at them. Someone later said "Choke on the bones, transphobe douchebags" in a Twitter post. Also on the scene was the infamously homophobic Westboro Baptist Church. I saw them chased out of one position after several parade floats opened fire with Super Soaker water squirters on them.

Gas-guzzling Air Force sponsors Clarendon Cup bicycle race

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 06/08/2014 - 12:51

On the 7th of June, the US Air Force was the lead sponsor of the Clarendon Cup bicycle race, as half of the "US Air Force Cycling Classic." I find it almost hypocritical that one of the world's largest users of jet fuel is sponsoring a bicycle race. A human-powered flight competition would at least be somewhat a match for them, however.
