Code Pink disrupts House Homeland Security hearing on new Iraq War

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 09/17/2014 - 11:51

On the 17th of September, Code Pink disrupted their second Congressional war hearing in a row. This time it was the House Homeland Security Committee Hearing on " Worldwide Threats to the Homeland," and Code Pink warned that more US intervention would be "counterproductive." In the previous day's hearing Code Pink warned Congress not to take "war bait" from ISIS/ISIL, suspected by some to be using a strategy that actually requires US intervention to work.

FCC gets another Net Neutrality protest

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 09/16/2014 - 14:23

On the 16th of September, net neutrality protesters returned to the headquarters of the FCC, where chairman Tom Wheeler is pushing a plan to allow "paid prioritization" of content from websites willing to pay internet service providers for premium access. This "internet fast lanes" plan would allow your phone or cable company to slow your access to videos from this site so that Facebook and Netflix would load faster, and could lead to the removal of most independent websites from the Internet if nobody can reach them. After all, the bandwidth has to come from somewhere.

Antiwar protesters greet Obama's Iraq War speech

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 09/11/2014 - 01:27

On the 10th of September, Obama gave a speech formally announcing the US was return to war in Iraq and now also in Syria, but only from the air supposedly. Antiwar protesters were in front of the White House booing some of his more bellicose words. One of the protesters said Obama wanted to bomb Assad last year, but now wants to join with Assad to bomb Islamic State. Which side is he on in Syria anyway-the chemical weapons side, or the religious extremism side?

Police cars crowd Bike Party, drive dangerously

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 09/11/2014 - 00:28

Video of the ride showing police interactions

On the 10th of September, several DC cops assigned to or othewise escorting the monthly Bike Party drive their cars in ways that made some of the riders feel they were being put as risk for a collision. They muscled their cars directly into the packs of riders, followed riders ahead of them too closely, and as a result had to make sudden stops that put riders behind them at risk of ramming the police cruisers if they could not stop quickly.

On the 8th of September, Earth Quaker Action team showed up at the Dupont Circle branch of PNC Bank, intending to enter the bank and perfrom a "4th grade math" themed skit against PNC's investments in mountaintop removal coal mining. Upon arrival the bank branch was found closed, with customers being turned away at the door. The branch appeared to have been closed long enough before protesters arrived that all but a few of those who got in before the closure had finished their business and left. Sierra Club demands Dominion Resources dump ALEC at ALEC's headquarters

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 09/04/2014 - 17:15

On the 4th of September, the Sierra Club backed up by Virigina residents including the Mayor of Alexandria showed up in front of the offices of ALEC, the American legislative Exchange Council. They were demanding that Dominion Resources stop contributing money paid by Virginia ratepayers to this far-right thinktank. ALEC is the largest non political party donor of campaign cash in Virginia, and Dominion's customers literally have no choice but to help ALEC corrupt the political process simply by paying their electrical bills.

Critical Mass rides to National Police memorial, King Memorial for Ferguson Solidarity

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 08/29/2014 - 22:58

On the 29th of August, Critical Mass bikes rides around the US were transformed in part or in whole to Ferguson solidarity events. Here in DC, the ride made a pit stop at the National Police Memorial, where "hand up don't shoot" photos were taken and the NWA song "Fuck Tha Police" was at one point played by a rider from a portable sound system. A second and more somber stop was at the Martin Luther King memorial.

Banks and Investors Call for New Debt Relief Rules In Wake of Argentina Hedge Fund Case

Submitted by imc-dc on Fri, 08/29/2014 - 11:08

The International Capital Market Association (ICMA), a group of banks and investors, will call Friday for reforms aimed at preventing repeats of the Argentina/NML Capital debt dispute. The ICMA's plan would reduce the ability of hold-out creditors to litigate and undermine debt restructuring, in part by using contract clauses to bind all bond-holders to debt restructuring that 75% of all holders agree on.

Code Pink protests at SecState Kerry's house for release of American journalist held by Egypt

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 08/25/2014 - 23:14

On the 25th of August, Code Pink and area Egyptians showed up outside the Georgetown home of US Secretary of State John Kerry. They were demanding that the US Embassy in Egypt take steps to demand that the illegal coup government of Egypt to release journalist Mohommed Soltan, who is a US citizen with family ties to Egypt. He has been effectively held hostage for a year, denied medical treatment for a bullet wound suffered while covering a protest, and has been on hunger strike. The government of Egypt receives nearly as much US aid as Israel, even though US aid to coup governments is illegal.

A FAQ on D.C. Voting Rights, Representation, and Statehood

Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 08/24/2014 - 03:40

During my 12 years living in the District, I have heard a lot of questions about, and uninformed arguments against, D.C. congressional representation and/or statehood. But I had never been able to find a single list of those questions or criticisms with reasonable answers. I did a bit of research and put together this Q & A. If you like it, please feel free to distribute it however you wish. (You need not put my name on it.) Thank you!
