FERC employees kept out by lockdown, blockades on Day 5 of fracking protests

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 11/07/2014 - 11:21

On the 5th day of fracking and gas export protests at FERC, activists locked down in the driveway and blockaded all doors. The result was a huge crowd of FERC rubber stampers kept outside watching the protest. It took police at least 2 1/2 hours to clear just the driveway blockade, and someone at FERC was reduced to herding their employees like sheep as cops made and changed plans to try and get through the protesters.

Net Neutrality protesters demand Obama fire FCC chair Tom Wheeler

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 11/06/2014 - 22:23

On the 6th of November, net neutrality protesters showed up at the White House demanding Obama fire or demote FCC chairman Tom Wheeler, a former Cable TV company lobbyist.

In the face of extreme public opposition to his plans to allow "paid prioritization" or website-paid Internet fast lanes, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler is attempting to use a "compromise" to reclassify Internet Service Providers as something other than neutral common carriers.

Rough and illegal arrests as activists blockade FERC for 3rd day in row

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 11/05/2014 - 15:53

On the 5th of November, fracking and gas export protesters returned to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the 3rd day in a row. Again protesters set multiple sequential blockades of the driveway. During one of the driveway blockades, Federal Protective Service cops wearing Homeland Security markings arrested protesters who were attempting to comply with the 3ed warning to disperse. During another they used excessive force, tackling seated activists to break up an arm-locked blockade line. There was even an arrest of a protester sitting on a bench not engaged in civil disobediance

Siege of FERC continues with second day of blockades

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 11/04/2014 - 10:20

On the 4th of November, climate marchers returned to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the second day in a row. Despite a heavy police presence they again blockaded streets and again forced FERC employees to step over protesters and even a mock town. The town is symbolic of all the towns destroyed by projects FERC has rubber stamped.

Climate Marchers march on Democrat headquarters, vow to obstruct pro-fossil fuel candidates

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 11/03/2014 - 20:06

Hours after blockading the headquarters of FERC, activists from the Great Climate March and their supporters marched on the national headquarters of the Democratic Party. Marchers warned that candidates who accept fossil fuel industry "donations" and support their positions would not only not get their votes but instead find activists "getting in their way." This is a direct threat to obstruct and oppose compaigns for President or other office by Hillary Clinton, Martin O' Malley, or anyone else who does the bidding of the fracking, tar sands, and mountaintop removal coal industries.

Black is Back marches on White House demanding "Peace through Revolution"

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 11/01/2014 - 17:48

Black is Back was formed in the aftermath of Barrack Obama's election, when many liberal "peace" groups abandoned antiwar protest because there was no longer a white GOP President. This year, the Back is Black march on the White House explicitly demanded "Peace through Revolution" in the aftermath of the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson and so many other police murders.

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 10/30/2014 - 16:34

Respect DC is reporting that DC's decision to support Wal-Mart by relocating a bus stop to directly in front of the store and installing pay parking meters on Peabody Street has devastated nearby small businesses. One business owner was quoted as saying "I have customers that tell me, ‘I want to come to your store, but the bus drops me at Walmart.’"

High Heel Race draws huge crowd to 17th st

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 10/29/2014 - 03:04

On the 28th of October, the annual High Heel Race drew a huge crowd to 17th st. This event is normally on the last Tuesday before Halloween. Until a 1991 police attack on the event it was an underground high heel race between some of the gay bars on Halloween itself. This provoked a massive occupation of 17th st by the GLBT community on Halloween 1992, and ever since it has been an officially supported event on the last Tuesday BEFORE Halloween

Only two DC Councilmembers attend Stop and Frisk hearing

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 10/27/2014 - 14:07

On the 27th of October, DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier appeared before the city countil to testify about the use of "stop and frisk" tactics by DC Police. This is an admission that Stop and Frisk exists in this town. Unfortunately, only two DC City Councilmembers bothered to attend, leading one witness to remark when a white witness was testifying that this amounted only to "three white people having a conversation."

Park Police attempt to order Pax Christi "Drone" away from Air and Space

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 10/25/2014 - 13:51

On the 25th of October, Pax Christi showed up in front of the national Air and Space museum with one of the large crank-up "drones" often seen at anti-drone protests. US Park Police demanded they crank it back down or move it. They moved it-back and forth in front of the museum, making it more visible because it was moving and causing mindless Park Police repression to backfire.
