Activists blockade Dominion's Richmond HQ against Atlantic Coast Pipeline

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 02/23/2015 - 14:14

Dominion is not only building a fracked gas export plant at Cove Point, MD, they also are seeking to build the "Atlantic Coast Pipeline" to transport some of that fracked gas. The pipeline would desecrate Native American burial grounds as well as promote more fracking. Shortly after 7 AM on the 23ed of February, over 50 activists blocked off access by car to Dominion Resources’ Tredegar Campus in Richmond, Virginia.

DC Ferguson marches on 7D police station

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 02/22/2015 - 22:24

On the 22nd of February, DC Ferguson met at the Congress Heights Metro in Anacostia and marched on the 7th District police station. Protesters were demanding justice for Ralphael Briscoe, who was shot in the back by a police "jump-out" squad back in 2011 without having even been suspected of having committed a crime. The shooting was described by one speaker as being a "drive-by." As usual, the police involved in this murder have been cleared of all charges and returned to duty. DC Ferguson is demanding that these murderers be punished-and that police jump-out tactics be ended in DC forever.

Muslims, DC Ferguson protest hypocritical "countering violent extremism" summit

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 02/18/2015 - 20:41

On the 18th of February, Obama began his "countering violent extremism" summit, which is mostly an event to coordinate police efforts to spy on and infiltrate Muslim communities. Outside, both Muslims and DC Ferguson activists called out this event for hypocrisy. The US itself was called out for the drone strikes used for extra-judicial executions throughout the Muslim world. This was compared to the routine and never punished street executions of African-Americans by killer cops, often by jump-outs in DC. Lastly everyone was reminded that the profile of almost every terrorist in the US has been an angry, armed white male. This includes last week's murder of three Muslims by a terrorist in North Carolina. No doubt Obama's summit will pay little attention to the ongoing drumbeat of mass murders by angry white men in the US.

DC Ferguson condemns lack of Federal charges for DC cops who killed Ralphael Briscoe

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 02/16/2015 - 17:15

On the 16th of February, DC Ferguson released a statement condemning the refusal of a Federal jury to hold DC cops even civally liable for the murder of Ralphael Briscoe during a "jump-out" attack by the police. Once again there is no justice for those murdered by the police, just the people. DC Ferguson has also called for a rally and march on Sunday, Feb 22 at 6PM starting at the Congress Heights Metro station. This protest will march to the 7th district police station.

Protesters outside CIA condemn drone killing of 12 year old

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 02/14/2015 - 15:02

The vigils against armed drones continue at CIA headquarters, 10 AM on the second Satuurday of each month. This month as always the vigil triggered the closure of the Dolly Madison Ave entrance to CIA for several hours. One focus of the February 14th vigil was the killing of 12 year old Mohammed Saleh Qayed Taeiman by one of these drone strikes in Yemen on Jan 26. Somehow the CIA identified him as one of three "al Qaeda militants" targeted for extra-judicial execution by armed drone.

DC Global Divestment Day demands AU divest from fossil fuel investments

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 02/13/2015 - 22:57

On the 13th of February, there were Global Divestiment Day actions in over 200 cities just on Turtle Island demanding that institutions divest from fossil fuel corporations. Here in DC, AU students and many others demanded that American University withdraw all of their investments from the fossil fuel industry. One speaker bluntly invoked the sucessful divestment campaign that forced South Africa to dump Apartheid. Another model, not mentioned at the protest would be the campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences that made them too hot for almost all financial institutions to handle.

DC area Muslims remember 3 students murdered at Chapel Hill, NC

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 02/12/2015 - 21:10

On the 12th of February, hundreds of people, mostly DC area Muslims, came together to remember three young Muslim students murdered in an apartment near Chapel Hill, Univ of North Carolina. Speakers at the Dupont Circle vigil included several people who knew them. There is considerable suspicion that the three young students were murdered because of their faith. The makes the Chapel Hill shootings a hate crime and an act of domestic terrorism.

Net Neutrality Activists Assaulted by security at FCC

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 02/10/2015 - 14:37

On the 10th of February, net neutrality activsts unfurled a banner reading "85% of Republican voters support net neutrality" in front of a Republican FCC commissioner inside the FCC. In response they were tackled and assaulted by security guards, who in turn threatened to charge THEM with assault. Even outside the FCC's headquarters security guards continued to harass activists.

FCC Commission Tom Wheeler (used to work for Cable TV) now says he is for Title II "common carrier" reclassification of ISP's, but Comcast and other ISP's are pushing back, no doubt callling in old favors. Mr Wheeler need to cut to the chase and put the ball in the endzone, not get himself whistled out by the people for delay of game.

Mock ICBM erected in Ellipse to oppose planned $1 trillion for new nukes

Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 01/31/2015 - 17:09

On the 31st of January, activists erected a mock ICBM missile in the Ellipse in opposition to US plans to spend $1 trillion on new nuclear weapons. Under the name "Global Zero" they called instead for the global decommissioning of nuclear weapons. Many of these weapons are decades old, some may not function if an attempt is made to use them, and they are a growing hazard for a release of nuclear waste.

Code Pink attempts to arrest Henry Kissinger in Congress

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 01/29/2015 - 19:51

Henry Kissinger is a notorious war criminal who must watch where he travels because of arrest warrants abroad. On the 29th of January, he found that citizen's arrest is also a danger. He showed up to speak before the Senate Armed Services Committee, only to find Code Pink was waiting for him. Considerable disruption ensued as the banners came up and Code Pink attempted to serve those international warrants via a citizen's arrest.

Mock arrest of Darren Wilson after Dept of Justice refuses civil rights charges

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 01/26/2015 - 21:25

On the 26th of January, the weekly Monday vigil for those murdered by police featured Code Pink staging a mock arrest of Darren Wilson while speakers condemned the so-called Dept of Justice for refusing to recommend civil rights charges be filed against him. Darren Wilson is the killer cop who gunned down Michael Brown in Ferguson. Now he is among the world's most wanted fugitives, he can't even go to 7-11 to buy a pack of skittles without fearing arrest not by the government but by the people.

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 01/24/2015 - 18:16

On the 24th of January, civil rights protesters showed up in Silver Spring, MD next to the outdoor skating rink by the Civic Center. Although this small group was entirely peaceful, heavily armored Montgomery County cops and three cop cars lurked about a block back watching. The music at the skating rink was gradually turned up in an attempt to override the rally speakers and their megaphone. The rally was very visible to all those using the skating rink, and educational in an unexpected place. It was followed by a short march through downtown Silver Spring.

DC cops arrested an activist they deemed an organizer as protesters confronted Philadelphia's police commissioner outside the hotel. Police brutality protesters occupy lobby of DC Police headquarters

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 01/12/2015 - 18:43

On the 12th of January, both Ferguson protesters and Guantanimo Bay protesters joined forces to occupy the lobby of DC Police (MPD) headquarters for just over 28 minutes. The 28 minutes symbolized the fact that every 28 hours a Black man, woman, or child is killed by police, security guards, or vigilantes in the US. The occupation was tense but no arrests were made.

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 01/11/2015 - 20:00

On January 11, 2002, the unlawful prison at Guantanimo Bay opened for business. On January 11, 2015 it was still in business even though President Obama vowed six years ago to close it. As on every January 11th back to 2007, a long line of protesters in orange jumpsuits and black hoods marched to demand the closure of Gitmo.
