Blackout DC blocks 395, stages coffin ceremony at US Capitol

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 08/15/2015 - 23:18

On the 15th of August, Blackout DC staged what was announced as a march from the White House to the Capitol to protest police murder of Black and Brown people. Cops expected a direct march but got a surprise! The march diverted from Penn Ave north up 7th st to Chinatown, then proceeded east to block the I-395 tunnels before finally going to the US Capitol. At the Capitol, offerings for those murdered by police were placed in a cardboard coffin. This was intended to take place on the Capitol steps, but US Capitol police blockaded the top exits from the Capitol West Lawn against protesters-and only protesters. As a result the offering ceremony took place on the spot where people were blocked.

Another huge DC Bike Party takes to the streets

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 08/13/2015 - 01:27

The July 3ed Anniversary special Bike Party was perhaps the largest ever, but the August 12th ride may have been second only to that one for sheer size. DC never seemed to get big Critical Mass or other such rides in the past, now the organizers of the DC Bike Parties seem to have found the magic formula for turn out in this town.

Hundreds "Bike around the Bomb" against nuclear weapons

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 08/09/2015 - 16:12

On August 9, 1945, the US dropped the second atomic bomb of WWII on Nagasaki, Japan. On August 9, 2015, hundreds rode in Global Zero's "Bike Around the Bomb" protest ride around the periphery of the part of DC that would be severely damaged by the smallest nuclear weapons in existance. Similar rides were conducted in cities all over the world. Several organizers spoke before the ride against efforts by the GOP (and AIPAC) to scuttle a nuclear deal with Iran that would block that country from building nuclear weapons. They warned that the alternative to the treaty may well be war.

Code Pink hula-hoops for nuclear peace deal with Iran

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 08/04/2015 - 21:59

On the 4th of August, Code Pink set up on the H st side of Lafayette Park with hula hoops and signs supporting the proposed nuclear agreement with Iran. The GOP and politicians funded by AIPAC are doing everything they can to kill this deal on Capitol Hill. It is possible that gas fracking and shale oil interests would also fund efforts to kill the deal, as the lifting of sactions on Iran could cause crude oil and gas prices to plunge. That could make fracking and tar sands unprofitable for years to come.

Protesters storm, disrupt P st Whole Foods over fake "cruelty-free" foods

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 08/03/2015 - 18:49

On the 3rd of August, Vegan activists from Direct Action Everywhere (DXE) swarmed into and disrupted shopping at the Whole Foods at 14th and P sts NW. A DXE investigation Youtube video found that Whole Foods is marketing factory farm products such as eggs from collectively caged hens as "cruelty-free." DXE called the Whole Foods marketing and endorsements from some animal welfare groups the "invasion of the movement snatchers." The "cruelty-free" eggs are just one example of fraudulent marketing of factory farm products at Whole Foods and suggest many more similar examples

Light Brigade remembers Sandra Bland at Supreme Court and Capitol

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 07/29/2015 - 02:42

On the 28th of July, the Light Brigade deployed lighted letters at the US Supreme Court and US Capitol to remember Sandra Bland. Police in Texas arrested Sandra and held her in jail for defying an illegal order from a cop at a traffic stop to put out her cigarette-in her own car. Three days later she was found dead in her cell with a noose around her neck. Some say she was lynched, certainly hanging is the very symbol of lynching. Sandra's mother has said "this means war" at her daughter's funeral. Her family and friends say there is no way she would have killed herself.

Rockville Confederate Statue Historically Corrected

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 07/27/2015 - 22:38

In Rockville, MD, a statue of a Confederate soldier sits outside a courthouse. Courthouses are one of the most important places people of color face systematic abuse, getting different "justice" than whites get. The Confederate statue outside is a symbol of the racism inside. On the morning of July 27, the words "Black Lives Matter" were found painted on the statue. County Executive Isaih Legget says the statue will soon be moved but no decision has been made on where. County officials were so fast to have the truth power-washed from the statue that only the original photos by an Uber driver clearly show the artist's work.

This photo was run on CBS TV9's website but credited to "?@nutzarieus," their own photos showed the remnants of the graffiti after the county hurredly tried to whitewash away the words "Black Lives Matter"

FEDS REGULARLY MONITORED BLACK LIVES MATTER SINCE FERGUSON

Submitted by repost on Sat, 07/25/2015 - 14:27

by George Joseph, Intercept
In response to The Intercept’s FOIA request, for example, last month the DHS’s Office of Operations Coordination released over 40 pages of documents (archive 1, archive 2) detailing live updates and Google Maps images of Black Lives Matter protestors’ movements during an April 29th protest in Washington, DC.

An April 29th email from the DHS National Operations Center also mentions planned surveillance of three seemingly innocuous events, two of which were associated with historically black neighborhoods. According to the email, the DHS-funded DC Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency decided to conduct “a limited stand-up… to monitor a larger than expected Funk Parade and two other mass gathering events” in case “any Baltimore-related civil unrest occurs.” It appears that the only Funk Parade in DC occurs in the historically black neighborhood of U Street. The other two events, according to another report, produced by the DHS National Capital Region‘s Information Collection and Coordination Center, were a community parade in Congress Heights, a predominantly black neighborhood, and the Avon 39-Walk to End Breast Cancer. Code Pink confronts Ted Cruz over Iran nuclear deal

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 07/23/2015 - 18:08

On the 23rd of July, Ted Cruz spoke at a right-wing rally opposing the nuclear deal with Iran staged by "Concerned Women for America" in front of the White House. Another, more progressive women's group showed up to oppose him. Code Pink managed to get in Mr Cruz's face opposing his message of hate and refusal to negotiate, Concerned Women for America is a group that was known during the 1980's for anti-Gay protests, so for Ted Cruz to appear at their rally is a message of support for anti-LGBTQ bigotryt on his part.

Apache Stronghold march against proposed Oak Flats copper mine arrives in DC

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 07/21/2015 - 19:56

On the 21st of June, Apache Stronghold marched into DC for a series of events demanding that a copper mine planned for Oak Flats be cancelled. This two-day series of events began with a sacred run from the north ariving down 16th Street at the White House. There they joined a second contingent of Apache and supporters waiting for them, held a rally at the White House and marched to the US Capitol to hold traditional ceremonies there. Apache Stronghold is here to support HR-2811, the Save Oak Flat Act, which would undo permission given to Resolution Mining LLC and Rio Tinto to mine copper on Apache land given to them in by Sen John McCain and reps Representatives Kirkpatrick and Gosar of Arizona.

Museum Square at 4th and K sts NW is one of the last affordable housing projects in Chinatown, containing nearly half the remaining Chinese community there plus many African-American residents. The owner of the building (Bush Properties in Va) wants to replace it with condos and luxury apartments for the rich. As part of the campaign to save the building and block the evictions, Busboys and Poets at nearby 5th and K st, held a party for Museum Square residents and supporters on July 20. The room was packed to standing room only.

"Christians United for Israel" draws protest

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 07/13/2015 - 19:55

On the 13th of June, protesters showed up outside the Washington Convention Center opposing the "Christians United For Israel" (CUFI) convention being held inside. Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike called out current Israeli occupation policies for violating the philosophies expoused by Jesus, thus calling the convention one of hypocrisy. One of the current positions espoused by CUFI (along with AIPAC) is opposition to any nuclear deal with Iran, as they advocate war against Iran instead. Some "Christian Zionists" believe that the Jews must hold Jerusalem to enable the Rapture, an event associated in the Bible with Armageddon and among other things the loss of the entire Jewish population in Jerusalem. Thus war with Iran would fit their agenda.

Huge DC Bike Party takes over streets on 3ed anniversary of first Bike Party

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 07/11/2015 - 15:47

The 10th of July marked the 3ed anniversary of the first DC Bike Party. For this occasion the Bike Party was moved to Friday instead of the normal 2nd Wednesday of every month, and a huge crowd showed up. This was much larger than any previous DC Bike Party I participated in, indeed larger than any other group ride I have ever seen in DC. In some places the ride was slow simply due to the huge traffic volume this many riders amount to.

CCAN protests oil carrying "bomb trains" in Baltimore

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 07/08/2015 - 22:08

On the 8th of July, Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) protested in front of Baltimore City Hall to support local residents and activists demanding a ban on the growing number of "bomb trains" entering the city. In the past two years there have been a growing number of trains carrying Bakken crude oil to or through Baltimore. These trains are called "bomb trains" due to the severe damage caused by them in recent railroad accidents, including the incineration of half of one small town.

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 07/08/2015 - 00:52

On the 7th of July, Occupy DC supporters gathered in Freedom Plaza to remember Kyle (Wild Child), Charlie Microphone, and Bill Miniutti, all of whom died recently. After several hours of storytelling and remembering old days with them, everyone marched from Freedom Plaza to McPherson Square. This was from one former Occupy DC campsite to the other, in the streets just like the way Occupy used to march during those intense months of 2011-2012.

July 4 pot legalization march faces fences, checkpoints, troops

Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 07/05/2015 - 13:54

Every July 4 there is a cannabis legalization march from the White House to a concert on the Mall near 23ed st. The march demands an end to all federal, state, and local laws persecuting pot users. Since 2002 the march has had to pass through police checkpoints to get to the concert site. This year there were an unusual number of troops and military vehicles in the streets as well as all those "Freedom American Style" bag search checkpoints.
