Cove Point Defender Fighting Charge for Filing Complaint Against Police Abuse

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 12/07/2015 - 17:56

LUSBY, Maryland — A police investigator and the State’s Attorney in southern Maryland have turned the tables on two activists involved with SEED (Stopping Extraction and Exports Destruction) after they filed complaints about unsafe and reprehensible police behavior. In an internal investigation of the complaints, members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office lied to cover up the actions of three officers during their response to a protest at a Dominion construction area tied to its liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project at Cove Point.

Saudi Embassy security gets rough with Code Pink protest of death sentences

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 12/03/2015 - 16:43

On the 3rd of December, Code Pink protested at th Embassy of Saudi Arabia against the many sentences of death by beheading recently handed down for political dissent. One of these sentences is for a poem condemning the country's oil industry. When protesters attempted to deliver a letter from the mothers of the condemned young men, the security guards responded with force to remove Code Pink from the embassy steps. Code Pink reponded by calling out Saudi Arabia for supporting Daesh (Isis) and the security guards for protecting funders of terrorism and war.

Global Climate March takes streets as cherry blossoms open in November

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 11/29/2015 - 17:35

On the 29th of November, the Global Climate March took to the streets of DC in solidarity with hard-pressed climate activists in Paris. There, the COP 21 climate change summmit starts on Nov 30, the 16th anniversary of the Battle of Seattle. Using the Nov 13 terrorist attacks as an excuse, the French police have banned all protest there. Activists deployed anyway in defiance of this ban, and on Nov 29 French police fired tear gas at them. Here in DC, as protesters marched past the Mall, cherry blossoms were opening out of season, underscoring the urgency of dealing with climate chaos. This has been the warmest year on average ever recorded by modern science.

Protest at White House remembers Ayotzinapa 43, condemns Plan Mexico

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 11/26/2015 - 16:28

On the 26th of November, activists showed up in front of the White House to remember the Ayotzinapa 43, teaching students who were pulled off their bus by Mexican police and murdered by still-unknown killers a little over a year ago. The Mexican government claims cartel gunmen did the killing, but even if true that still raises the question of wny the police would turn a anyone over to drug cartels. Those who escaped the initial battle and survived reported that police opened fire on the busses to stop them. 43 of the students were forced into police vehicles and were never seen again. One escapee was found at the scene tortured to death. One report claims 6 were killed and 26 wounded in the initial ambush.

Video from Nov 17 Trans march on 5th and K, Wal-Mart, Union Station

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 11/21/2015 - 18:06

This is video and coverage from DC's Trans Week of Action march on 5th and K, Wal-Mart, and Union Station on November 17, 2015. The 5th and K area used to be used by transgender sex workers until police harassment forced them away so new condos could open. Wal-mart was targetted as they are being sued for firing Transgender employees. Union Station was chosen as the finish as it is an excellent location to educate commuters. A note on messaging: Trangender organizers put this march together along with Blackout DC, and the "Trans Lives Matter" slogan was used only after discussion between Transgender and Black Lives Matter activists in DC

Mayor Bowser begins raids on homeless camps

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 11/20/2015 - 21:02

On the 20th of November, Mayor Bowser carried out her threat to begin DPW "cleanup" raids on homeless camps with an attack on the camp in Rock Creek Park near Va Ave. A trash truck, a box truck, and a shelter van were brought in, along with at least one police van for security. Recent Dept of Justice opinions opposing prosecution of the homeless may have deterred forcible removal, but it was clear that some belongings other than the tents were either being thrown in the trash or hauled away to a government warehouse. As of 7PM, many tents were still standing, and it appeared that most residents had refused the Mayor's demands to move to city-controlled shelters. The shelters are known for everything from metal detectors to bedbugs, and some refuse to use them.

Violent arrest at 2nd night of Trans Week of Action street protests

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 11/18/2015 - 23:57

On the 18th of October, Trans Week of Action protesters took to the streets for the second night in a row. This time around, the blockades targeted the area around Target. Police tried to aggressively move traffic past protesters. When protesters stood their ground, one cop responded first with pushing, then with a violent takedown and arrest of an activist perceived as an organizer. Arrest can be a life-threatening experience for any transgender person, so the rest of the protesters were severely agitated by this, ultimately responding by retaking the exact same intersection.

Anti-TPP "torchlight" parade storms Morgan-Stanley, beseiges Monsanto and Ronald Reagan building

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 11/16/2015 - 22:18

On the evening of November 16, anti-TPP protesters assembled at the US Chamber of Commerce for a "torchlight" themed parade. The "torches" were toilet roll shades lit from the inside by LED lights. This march stormed the building housing investment banker Morgan Stanley's offices. Next marchers blocked access to Monsanto after a failed attempt to get inside. Finally the march went to the Ronald Reagan building and largely took over the plaza in front of it on the 14th st side.

US Trade Rep's office festooned with "TP" by anti TPP trade deal protesters

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 11/16/2015 - 13:23

On the 16th of November, opponents of the Trans-Pacific Partnershio (TPP) marched on the offices of the United States Trade Representative(USTR), blocked entrances for a while, and festooned the area with anti-TPP toilet paper. This sort of thing just had to happen sooner or later-TP'ing the TPP. As a "night action" it would have been a potent enough symbol, but this was done in the open while activists controlled both the sidewalk and that half of the street.

Palestine supporters jeer Netanyahu's motorcade at Center for American Progress

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 11/10/2015 - 16:15

On the 10th of November, Israel's extremist Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke at the Center for American Progress. His motorcade had to pass jeering protesters on the far side of the street. Not only that, as his motorcade was being planned the protesters were on the near side of the street. Had the protesters refused to move the motorcade-and the speech-would have had to wait. Until protesters actually did move the outcome of this was unknown to police. No head of state likes to run a gauntlet of jeering protesters.

Keystone XL opponents celebrate victory over tar sands pipeline

Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 11/07/2015 - 21:07

On the 6th of November, President Obama formally rejected TransCanada's permit for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline to cross the US-Canada border. After 7 years of struggle, the resistance is catching fire, and pipeline after pipeline is being rejected. With other pipelines in Canada also being stopped and oil prices plunging, tar sands projects are being cancelled and investment funds for "unconventional oil" are drying up. Protest WORKS, and on the evening of Nov 6 activists gathered in front of the White House to celebrate victory in what has been a long and difficult battle.

"Bees" swarm hardware stores for removal of bee-killing pesticides

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 11/04/2015 - 17:03

On the 4th of November, activists from multipe groups "swarmed" into an Ace and a True Value hardware store asking that both chains stop selling neo-nicotinoid pesticides. Some were dressed as bees and one of them was a beekeeper and wore beekeeping gear. They delivered letters and petitions to both stores concerning the neo-nicotinoid pesticides and plants containing them, both of which have been implicated in colony collapse disorder and the massive die-offs of honeybees
