Texas abortion case draws huge pro-choice protest, smaller right-wing to Supreme Court

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 03/02/2016 - 17:26

On the 2nd of March, the US Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of the Texas abortion clinic restriction law HB2. A lower court upheld a law imposing numerous architectural requirements on clinics and requiring doctors to be affiliated with hospitals. Huge crowds outside the Supreme Court chanted "Stop the Sham" referring to bogus claims this law was meant to protect women from doctors. A much smaller number of right-wingers was buried in this crowd, many of them surrounded by an arm-locked line of pro-choice activists. One of the right-wing speakers was from "Concerned Women for America,"(CWA) which is listed as an anti-Gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Code Pink confronts Secretary of State Kerry over US weapons sales to Saudi Arabia

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 02/26/2016 - 16:04

On the 26th of February, Code Pink released video of Medea Benjamin confronting US Secretary of State Kerry over US sales of weapons to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is a Wahhabi theocracy known for whippings and beheadings, with few differences for its subjects from living in Daesh's so-called "caliphate." They spend billions gotten from the world oil market on promoting their fundamentalist visions in Muslim communities around the world and they intervene in countries like Bahrain to support Sunni governments against popular uprisings. The weapons used in Saudi military interventions come from the United States

Tenants facing mass eviction, rent hikes storm Bush Properties office

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 02/25/2016 - 17:40

On the 25th of February, tenants from Museum Square and Mt Vernon Plaza backed by ONE DC and API Resistance showed up outside their landlord's office in Clarendon, VA. Originally the plan was to send a delegation inside to deliver their letter demanding an end to illegal attempts to intimidate tenants into moving out. The tenants themselves though had another idea, with almost the whole group essentially storming the building and taking over the lobby. Bush Properties accepted their letter, but the person taking denied that they were even at the right office. Organizers knew better than to buy that excuse but everyone marched back outside, chanting "we'll be back!"

FBI demand to unlock iPhones draws protest at Hoover Building

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 02/24/2016 - 00:55

On the 23rd of February, protesters representing groups from Code Pink all the way to the CATO Institute showed up in front of the FBI's J Edgar Hoover building to protest the FBI's demands that Apple help them defeat encrypted iPhones. Speakers emphasized that this is not about one iPhone but all iPhones. Several predicted that if the FBI is sucessful those who steal credit card information would also take advantage of it. A Black Lives Matter speaker emphasized the danger that police surveillance and especially phone snooping poses to their movement. She reminded everyone of the ugly history of COOINTELPRO and racist FBI suppression of people of color. To many in this world, the FBI is not fighting terrorists, they are the terrorists.

Labor Activists storm National Retail Federation demanding living wage and predictable hours

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 02/12/2016 - 21:31

On the 12th of February, many hundreds of labor activsts were in town for the National Jobs With Justice Conference. In late afternoon a massive march left the conference. The march divided into two, with the restarant workers going to the DC Chamber of Commerce and the retail workers marching on the National Retail Federation's DC headquarters. At the National Retail Federation, marchers stormed the building because of this organization's active lobbying against living wage legislation and legislation to stop "just in time" scheduling that leaves workers with unpredictable hours.

by Grassroots Media DC
On January 26, 2016, the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent came to the District of Columbia to hear how African-Americans are being treated in the United States. Individuals were able to give testimony during a town hall meeting arranged by Pan African Community Action. Topics discussed included gentrification, police brutality, labor, environmental racism and gender oppressions. This video is a montage of testimonials regarding the many unarmed Blacks who've been killed by the police, most of whom don't get national attention.

Calvert County still prosecuting anti-LNG export activist for reporting police brutality

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 02/08/2016 - 22:00

Earlier this year, Carling Sothoron and Heather Doyle climbed and hung a banner from a crane at the construction site for Dominion Resources's fracked gas export facility near Cove Point, Maryland. During the extraction and arrest, both Carling and Heather, who are expert climbers, experienced an unsafe extraction by the Calvert County Sheriff's Office and Heather was assaulted during her arrest. After the court proceedings for their action Heather filed an official complaint about their treatment. Instead of holding its officers accountable, Calvert County is now prosecuting Heather for “making false statements to an officer”.

Baltimore Bloc, allies shut down Pro-Rape "Men's Rights" meetup

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 02/07/2016 - 00:50

On the 6th of February, a "men's rights" meetup organized by Daryush "Roosh" Valizdeh was planned for the Cross Street Market in Baltimore, MD as one of 165 similar meetups on an "International Meetup Day." Roosh is infamous for calling for the legalization of rape as well as for preaching hatred against women in general and GLBT people in particular. The Baltimore Bloc organized a counterprotest against these pro-rape men, and not a single one of them could be found at their Baltimore meetup location.

Labor activsts and Vegans protest TPP at Baltimore World Trade Center

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 02/04/2016 - 21:51

On the 4th of February, a mix of labor activists and area vegans showed up at the Baltimore World Trade Center to protest the signing of the TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP is a yet to be ratified trade deal that a former steelworker described as "Nafta on steroids" before singing a song of dissent at this protest. All the worst provisions of the trade deal that ate som many jobs (including his) are present in the TPP and as bad or worse than in NAFTA and so many more countries are affected.

Protest at White House against TPP signing-hours before signing and NZ street blockades

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 02/03/2016 - 16:00

On the 3rd of February Washington Time or Feb 4 New Zealand time, Obama was in Sky City Casino in New Zealand to sign the TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership at 5:30PM EST. This is an ugly NAFTA style trade deal the likes of which have not been seen since the FTAA, CAFTA, and the failed Seattle/Doha trade talks. As protesters and heads of state gathered in New Zealand, a broad coalition of groups sent representatives to a protest in front of the White House calling the trade deal "betrayal."

Migrant advocates deliver petitions against Obama's ICE raids to White House

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 02/02/2016 - 16:16

On the 2nd of February, a number of immigrant rights groups held a "Stop the Raids" press conference outside the White House before delivering over 130,000 signed petitions. The petitions were actually accepted by two White House staffers and sniffed by the dog before being taken inside. Usually White House petition deliveries are refused, and often that leads to civil disobedience blockades. Before the delivery, speaker after speaker denounced the frankly terroristic raids on immigrants at their homes by ICE. Although not mentioned at this rally, many suspect Obama is doing this in response to Trump's hatemongering demands.

White House Peace Vigil lives on after Concepcion's passing

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 02/02/2016 - 16:03

While the passing of Concepcion Piccolo was widely reported in the mainstream press, there has been not one word there about the continuing of the White House Peace Vigil, which lives on. Just when the National Park Service and the White House thought kings and dictators would be able to visit the White House without seeing a reminder of what their policies can do, just when they thought it was "safe to go back in the water," the vigil continues.

On the 28th of January, members of several Native American nations showed up outside the headquarters of the EPA to demand that thousands of abandoned uranium mines be cleaned up.The mines are leaking uranium into water depended on by the tribes, causing cancer and many early deaths. One government offical was reported to have the nerve to blame the illnesses on "drinking" leaving out the fact that that drinking the WATER is what is causing cancer.

Concepcion dies after 35 years of antinuclear vigil at White House

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 01/27/2016 - 19:01

On Monday, Jan 25, Piccolo Concepcion died, reported at an assisted living facility, known for her 35 year long vigil against nuclear weapons at the White House. This vigil began all the way back in 1981, during the darkest days of Ronald Reagan and two years before the "Able Archer" nuclear forces wargame nearly led to nuclear war by accident. Many confrontations took place in the early years, and most of the arcane regulations unique to what was known as Peace Park were the government's response. The vigil began with signs leaned on the White House fence, leading to the "no protest zone" used so often for civil disobedience to this day. It then crossed the street and huge antinuclear signs that doubled as small cabins were erected. They were cut down with chainsaws, leading to the current "structures" regulations concerning signs, etc. For all the brutality and crazy laws that went into effect, for all the bad arrests later overturned in court, the government never did manage to shut down the vigil.

Pro-choice activists block antiabortion march

Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 01/22/2016 - 13:03

On the 22nd of January, pro-choice activsts gathered at noon at the US Supreme Court. They got there ahead of the incoming anti-choice march that harasses the Supreme Court every year on the anniversary of Roe Vs Wade. With the incoming snow one online posting advised people "2' to 3' of snow-wear the tall boots." Perhaps the antichoice marchers could take that one step farther and wear jackboots? When they arrived at the Supreme Court, militant pro-choice activists got into the street and blocked the march

National Airport contract workers march, blockade 14th and Indep Ave

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 18:01

On the 18th of January, airport contract workers from National Airport supported by union organizers gathered near the MLK Memorial, then marched on Independance Ave and stopped to blockade the intersection of 14th st and Independence Ave. Blackades there quickly stop traffic back to the 14th st Bridge, thus effectively blockading the bridge itself. This blockade was only held for a few minutes and was on the MLK holiday but is a clear warning of disruption to come unless these contract workers get their demands. The demand is simple: $15 an hour with benefits and the right to organize a union. Otherwise, Poverty doesn't fly-and it doesn't drive either.

"Muriel's gotta go-go" dance party demands removal of Mayor Bowser

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 01/16/2016 - 22:16

On the 16th of January Black Lives Matter activists staged the first "Muriel's Gotta Go-Go" dance party outside the Reeves Center. The dance party was complete with a sound truck playing banned go-go music, prohibited in DC nightclubs by ruthless governmental harassment. Due to this ban the protest was billed as a civil disobedience just for playing the music. Demand included not only the removal of the ban on playing go-go music in clubs, but the removal of DC Mayor Bowser from office. In response to the Black Lives Matter movement she has proposed more cops, more fines, and more searches and activists are saying this shall not pass!

Migrant and Native American activists protest Obama's ICE raids

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 01/16/2016 - 17:23

On the 16th of January, migrants backed by Native American activists protested in front of the White House to demand not only and end to the recent terror wave of ICE raids, but all deportations. At the climax of the protest activists laid flowers around the borders of a cutout of the part of Turtle Island claimed by the US, saying" we are here because you're there." As this was done a long list of destructive US interventions in Latin America and the Middle East that generated migrants was read out.
