Submitted by Luke on Sat, 05/21/2016 - 15:34

On evening of the 21st of May, Black Lives Matter activists gathered at the Department of Justice to demand investigations into police murders of Black women both Cisgendered and Transgendered. A projector was set up, showing scenes of some of the police incidents that led to the deaths of Black women at the hands of police on the walls of the Department of Justice.

Closure of FERC "public" meeting draws street blockade

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 05/19/2016 - 17:19

The monthly "public" meeting on May 19th of the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC) was closed to the public in response to this week's protests. In response protesters took over 1st St NE in front of FERC's doors. Sounds of chainsaws and fracking fluid injection were played over the PA at one point, at another point the mock eminent domain notice against FERC chairman Norman Bay's house was read aloud for the second time. It had been posted the previous day when the mock pipeline was set up at the Chairman's house.

Anti-TPP activists perform street theater, then march to DNC

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 05/18/2016 - 21:38

On the 18th of May the US International Trade Commission (US ITC) released its economic impact statement of the TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.

Outside, both the Rubber Stamp Rebellion and the No Lame Duck Uprising were present, performing a skit about how the ISDN or "Investor State Dispute resolution" corporate courts would let oil companies sue the US for demanding they clean up their spills or limit their drilling. The skit ended with Uncle Sam, hat in hand, begging the taxpayers for money to pay off the TPP ISDN judgements to Big Pig Oil.

Rubber Stamp Rebellion begins with AM and PM blockades of FERC, 7 arrests-and a home demo

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 05/16/2016 - 08:51

On the 16th of May, the Rubber Stamp Rebellion began with an 8AM blockade and noisefest outside the offices of FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This was followed by a PM rush hour "pipeline" blockade stopping all traffic out of FERC's driveway. That night, FERC Commissioner Tony Clark got home only to find protesters were there too. FERC is notorious for rubberstamping almost all permits for oil and gas fracking and pipelines. They are also the source of eminent domain authority for these projects.

Break Free From Fossil Fuels demands end to offshore drilling

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 05/15/2016 - 22:05

On the 15th of May, the global Break Free From Fossil Fuels protests came to DC with a march from the White House to the Lincoln Memorial. The demand in DC was for an end to offshore oil drilling, just days after Shell spilled more oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the marchers carried a mock offshore "jack-up" oil drilling rig through the streets.

Protesters deliver coffin to GOP HQ during Trump's DC Visit

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 05/12/2016 - 21:02

On the 12th of May, a visit to GOP headquarters on Capitol Hill by Donald Trump drew immigrant protesters and Code Pink as well. The protest appeared to have been either spontaneous or organized on very short notice,as seemingly no information had been available anywhere the previous night. Despite this short notice opponents of Trump's gutter racism managed to drop a coffin right in front of GOP headquarters. Inside RNC headquarters, staffers were told to either support Donald Trump or leave.

Code Pink protests "#IsraeliSaudi" event, gets a team inside hotel

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 05/06/2016 - 00:24

On the 5th of May, high-level Saudi and Israeli officials met at the so-called "Mandarin Oriental" hotel in SW DC. Code Pink got a team inside before they were escorted back out. Code Pink then set up a noisy "teach-in" protest outside. Everyone in earshot heard about how both the Saudis and Israelis are among the worst human rights violators and sponsors of war in the entire Middle East. The Saudis were also called out for beheading people just like Daesh(ISIS) does and for planning to behead and crucify young Ali Nimr because his uncle was a (recently beheaded) prominant Shiite cleric. Saudi Arabia and Israel are both famous for being states founded on religion, also much like Daesh.

Striking Verizon workers, union allies picket Verizon Wireless store

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 05/05/2016 - 23:15

On the 5th of May, striking Verizon workers backed by many other unions showed up to picket the Verizon Wireless store on F st, asking people NOT to shop there. Verizon workers have warned "no contract, no work" and are backing it up with this strike. One of the issues is Verizon wants to outsource their jobs. Another is that only a tiny raise (possibly less than inflation) is being offered while Verizon has made $1.5 Billion dollars a month each month this year. Verizon has decided not to expand FIOS fiber service nor employee wages, choosing instead to expand CEO pay. CEO Ivan G Seidenberg is being paid $36M a year with salary and bonuses. That's enough to buy a 2008 Gulfstream G-550 corporate jet listed on an aviation website for $23M with $13M left over. Meanwhile Verizon workers are offered only what strikers described as a net $200 a month raise

Mayday reportback from DC and around the world

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 05/01/2016 - 21:16

On Mayday (May 1), there were two marches in DC. One was the annual march from Malcolm X Park to the White House, which included demands that ICE be expelled from DC, that the TPP trade deal never be ratifed, and that area stores respect the Driscolls Berries boycott. The other march began at Marbury Plaza where Alonzo Smith was murdered by "special police" in Anacostia and ended at the 7D police station.

Dissent limited at Offshore oil/gas Drilling "open house"

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 04/26/2016 - 22:51

On the 26th of April, members of a number of environmental organizations held a rally outside the Marriot on 12th st near Metro Center denouncing the 2017-2022 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program. Afterwards they sought to enter the "Open House" being held inside for a draft version of the environmental impact statment. The person in a polar bear costume was denied entry to the building, security guards collected people's signs on the way in-and they moved to interfere with anyone shooting photos or videos in the lobby.

People of faith disrupt FERC meeting over gas fracking

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 04/25/2016 - 01:54

On the 25th of April, members of a number of churches and religious groups answered a call by Interfaith Moral Action on Climate to speak out and disrupt the April monthly meeting of FERC, infamous as the fracked gas industry's rubber stamp. FERC is also the agency that gives the builders of gas and oil pipelines the power to resort to eminent domain.

Vigil demands release of Purvi Patel, jailed for self-induced abortion

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 04/21/2016 - 22:34

Purvi Patel is serving 20 years of a 46 year "feticide" sentence in Indiana over a use of pills ordered online for a self-induced abortion that left her in the hospital. Donald Trump has called for, then tried to retract his call for imprisoning women like Purvi for illegal abortions. The Susan B Anthony List and other antichoice groups have been attempting to distance themselves from Trump's call for prison terms. On the 21st of April the Susan B Anthony List held a high-profile dinner at the Andrew Mellon Auditoriam on Constitution Ave. Outside, protesters held a vigil demanding the "walk the walk" by issuing a statement calling for Purvi Patel's release.

Developers' gentrifying, "space finding" bus tour blocked in Anacostia

Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 04/20/2016 - 14:15

On the 19th of April, some of DC's gentrifying developers held a "space finding" bus tour of Anacostia looking for convenient places to displace local people and build new settlements for the wealthy. Like the settlers who came before them, they found they were not welcomed by those they seek to evict from their homes. Protesters from Empower DC and Black Lives Matter blocked the streets and forced them to turn back. The Washington Business Journal. Cops ordered the bus driver to reverse out of the trap, then arrested one of the activists to retaliate for driving off the condo builders and their bus. This was the second time this same bus tour was attempted and blocked.

On the 18th of April,Democracy Awakening marched to the US Capitol for the culminating sit-in of a series begun a week ago by Democracy Spring. At the head of the march were NAACP and CASA contingents, including familes with small children. There appeared to be considerable overlap with the immigration rights protest at the Supreme Court. The march took over a good part of the Capitol Plaza upon arrival. During the sit-in, the presidents of the NAACP and of Greenpeace were among those arrested.

Huge protest for immigrant rights as Supreme Court hears US vs Texas

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 04/18/2016 - 20:10

On the 18th of April, pro-migrant protesters took over much of the area in front of the US Supreme Court as the court heard Texas's challenge to Obama's deportation relief program. Texas and other GOP controlled states are trying to block implementation of Obama's DAPA/extended DAPA programs, which "defer" deportation for those whose children were born on US soil and are thus considered citizens even by the flatly illegal settler regime that controls the part of Turtle Island called the "United States." The GOP gains votes on racism and hate, thus is trotting out every possible excuse to attack Latino families.

Kayaktivists deploy anti-Dominion banner at Solomons opening of Tiki Bar

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 04/15/2016 - 22:23

On the 15th of April, the "Tiki Bar" in Solomons, MD opened for the year, drawing a huge crowd to tiny Solomons, MD. As the partying began, activists opposing Dominion's under-construction LNG/fracked gas export plant at nearby Cove Point paddled in from seaward and deployed a banner reading "Dominion=Disaster." This is the literal truth due to the extreme size of explosions resulting from accidents at other LNG plants, none of them in populated areas like Lusby and Cove Point.

Things start gettting a bit rough at Democracy Spring

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 04/15/2016 - 22:04

On the 15th of April, the Democracy Spring protests included the DC Statehood issue and the count for civil disobedience arrests rose to nearly 1,000 for the week. In a few cases police have been getting out of line. On April 15, one of the last protesters to be arrested was tackled and pinned to the ground after dancing a bit just before arrest. Also, there is a report that at least ten spurious charges of "assaulting a police officer" were filed by police, only to be immediatly dismissed in court. Usually police file that charge when they are the ones using violence e.g hitting a cop on the club with your head can draw an ASPO charge.

Black Lives Matter and Anacostia organizers lead 3rd march on Capitol by Democracy Spring

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 04/13/2016 - 21:14

On the 13th of April, Black Lives Matter and other Ward 8 organizers led Democracy Spring's 3rd march on the US Capitol. The lead banner was from the Save Barry Farms organizers advising people to refuse to move, blocking displacement. When the march arrived at the Capitol, the third sit-in in as many days followed. As police arrested the folks in the sit-in, they also put police lines around the support people after moving them back behind the first police line. At one point they were told they too were subject to arrest, unknown if any arrests other than voluntary ones resulted from this. The final arrest total for the three days so far has now climbed to in excess of 700.
