Renters Day of Action rally demands rent freeze, eviction moratorium

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 09/23/2016 - 01:36

The 22nd of September was the national Renter's Day of Action, with protests in over 50 cities. In DC, tenants from Congress Heights, Museum Square, and other threatened buildings gathered on Alabama Ave by 3200 13th st. Geoff Griffis of City Partners(investor) and Sanford Capitol(landlord) plan to demolish it and the adjacent occupied buildings anyway to build luxury apartments. They are stopped at the moment by Metro refusing to put a related land sale on the agenda. The banner at 3200 13th st read "liberated territory" and police acted like they expected OneDC and Justice First! to sieze the building like what happened at Parcel 42 back in 2010.

TD Bank at 15th and P locks doors over ONE #NoDAPL protester

Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 09/21/2016 - 17:01

On the 17th of September, visits to TD Bank Branches by first six and then four #NoDAPL protesters were sufficient to shut two branches down. On the 20th of September, one activist paid "recon by action" visits to three TD Bank branches to see if this meant a single protester could also shut them down. Results were mixed. The TB Bank at 15th and P was repeatedly hit by Keystone XL protests including a barrel lockdown during that campaign so they were quick to lock their doors so long as that one protester entired the ATM lobby and did not just stand on the sidewalk. If a customer entered that lobby alone, the doors were quickly unlocked and relocked.

Kayaktivists take No LNG export at Cove Point message to Annapolis

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 23:46

On the 17th of September, "We Are Cove Point" took to the water in Annapolis, MD in several kayaks and a sailboat against Dominion's LNG export plant at Cove Point, MD. The kayaktivists were demanding that MD Governor Hogan order a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) to determine just how dangerous the under-construction fracked gas export plant really is. Given the recent explosion of leaked residential gas that was enough to demolish an apartment building in Silver Spring, MD, it pays to take the risks associated with natural gas seriously. Several large LNG plants have exploded over the years, and amount of gas potentially involved in such blasts can be measured in kilotons. The Cove Point plant is unique for being in a populated area.

Two more TD Bank branches shut down in face of NoDAPL protests

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 09/19/2016 - 14:14

On the 17th of September, Climate First! took a crew of six protesters to a branch of TD Bank at about noon to speak to the manager about TD Bank's investments in the Dakota Access Pipeline. This was sufficent to cause TD Bank to shut their doors and lock out all their customers. Sometime later four of the six went to a second branch of TD Bank, with the same results. TD Bank is so afraid of public scrutiny of their investments in poisoning Native Americans at Standing Rock they won't stay open if their is any sign of dissent. This suggests that protesters against TD Bank could disperse one person to each branch within range, which should close all branches in the area.

Lantern Walk remembers African-American founders of Barry Farms and Hillsdale

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 09/18/2016 - 18:45

In recent years DC's developers and their bought-and-paid for politicians have been trying to move out the residents of Barry Farms to make way for "redevelopment" and what they think of as "progress." On the 17th of September, the 11th st Bridge Park Washington Performing Arts held a Lantern Walk remembering the African-American builders who built their homes in Barry Farms and Hillsdale while working such long hours in town that they often had to walk back to Anacostia by lantern light. Some of the participants in the Lantern Walk sang "We shall not be moved" by the 11th St Bridge, a clear reference to the current threats to Barry Farms.

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 09/15/2016 - 18:46

On the 15th of September, Rainforest Action Network staged a "Keep it in the Ground" rally to demand that Obama cease and desist leasing out Federal lands for oil and gas leasing. Indigenous opponents of fossil fuel extraction and especially of the Dakota Access Pipeline were a large portion of the participants. Meanwhile, news from Standing Rock has emerged that police have now filed a conspiracy charge against a supporter for simply giving somone who participated in action a ride to the camp.

#NoDAPL protesters shut down two branches of TD Bank

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 09/14/2016 - 17:28

On the 14th of September, activists opposing construction of the Dakota Access pipeline shut down two branches of TD Bank. Several of the protesters on Sep 14th drove all the way from Standing Rock, N Dakota, an over 20 hour drive. TD Bank is a major investor in the pipeline, just as they were a major investor in the failed attempt to build the Keystone XL. During that campaign some called them "Tar Dollar" bank. The first branch locked out customers after an advance team of three entered the branch to read out a letter condemning their investments in the pipeline. The second branch was found locked when protesters reached it, it is unknown if they had been locked up all through the protest at the first branch or locked up when activsts departed from there. TD Bank locked down so protesters didn't have to it seems.

Moral Mondays begin at DC Council

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 09/12/2016 - 18:24

On the 12th of September, DC social activists and religious leaders began holding "Moral Mondays" at the DC Council demanding that miniumum wages be raised, public housing be perserved, schools and public property not be privatized, mass incarceration be ended, and more. Moral Mondays began in North Carolina as a protest against right-wing and racist policies of the state government such as restricting voting rights and cutting social programs. In North Carolina Moral Mondays are known for civil disobedience, DC councilmembers should consider the possibility that failure to address the needs of the people could force the use of civil disobedience here in DC as well.

Unity walk between Synagogue, churches, and Islamic Center stands against religious hate

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 09/11/2016 - 22:12

On the 15th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, a "Unity Walk" originated at Washington Hebrew Congregation, ended at the Islamic Center, and stopped in at most of the churches, temples, and other religious institutions along the way. The march was in opposition to religious hate, under the theme "know your neighbor." At the Islamic Center, a Jewish Rabbi spoke condemning the persecution of US Muslims that has taken place since the entirely foreign 9-11 attacks. No direct mention of Trump and the wave of hate he was stirred up was necessary.

DAPL update: DOJ, US Army, DOI call for construction halt after injunction denied

Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 09/09/2016 - 17:57

On the 9th of September, Judge James Boasberg denied the request by the Standing Rock Sioux for a preliminary injunction against further construction of the Dakota Access pipeline. The pipeline builders now have other problems though: The US Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of the Interior, and the Department of Justice are all calling for a construction halt anyway. Energy transfer has foolishly built a significant part of the pipeline well away from the area being defended by Native America land defenders and now stands to lose a large amount of money if the pipeline cannot cross the Missouri river. In short they will pay for their attempted aggression and their dog attacks by losing their shirts.

Support and defend striking prisoners in MD and VA

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 09/09/2016 - 13:25

Prisoners nationally have gone out on a work stoppage on Friday, Sep 9. Prisoners in MD at Jessup state prison and Cumberland Federal prison, and in VA at the Red Onion, Buckingham, and Fluvanna state prisons and are participating in the work stoppage. They need your help to prevent retaliation against them by prison officials. People are being asked to call several of the prisons so the staff will understand that trouble on the inside will have consequences on the outside. The demand of the strike is simple: end slavery in US prisons!

A variety of solidarity actions took place around DC and Baltimore on Sep 9th and 10 targetting corporations like Mcdonalds, Starbucks, and Verizon that profit from prison labor plus a protest by the IWW outside the MD correctional facility in Baltimore

They gave Congress a simple warning: any attempt to ratify the TPP during a "lame duck" session will face severe disruption! Code Pink protests arms sales to Saudi theocrats as Congress returns

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 09/07/2016 - 17:50

On the 7th of September, Code Pink protested US arms sales to Saudi Arabia at the Hart Building as Congress came back to town. Saudi Arabia is using those US weapons to bomb Yemen in support of their sectarian agenda there and has even bombed schools. While one team stayed outside a second team went inside-and was threatened with arrest over giving supporters of Saudi Arabia's bombing campaign the "bloody hands" treatment.

Reportback from Rally4Refugees

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 08/28/2016 - 19:58

On the 28th of August DCRally4Refugees held a mixed concert/speaking event at Sylvan Theater near the Washington Monument. Bands alternated with speakers as organizers sought to raise funds and connect people with groups active on refugee issues. They pointed out that more people have been displaced from their homes now than ever before, and due to the war in Syria the total number of international refugees has now topped 20 million. A tiny number of Trump supporters tried to counterprotest this event, but at one point a pair of Code Pink activist counter-counterprotesting them was equal to 40% of their numbers. Meanwhile, a speaker from El Salvador called out the utter hypocrisy of those who benefit from migrant labor while demanding migrants leave.
