Submitted by Luke on Tue, 04/12/2016 - 22:38

On the 12th of April, restaurant workers protested first at the DC Council, then at the Ronald Reagan Building demanding that the minimum wage for tipped workers be raised from $2.77 an hour to $15 an hour. The National Restaurant Association ("other NRA") was meeting at the Reagan building. Outside, protesters offered a stack of bags of ice as the "Frozen Wages Award" for former NRA CEO Herman Cain for his role in blocking prior increases in the mimimum wage for restaurant workers, who at "tipped employees" can make next to nothing if the restaurant is empty on a bad night.

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 04/02/2016 - 22:57

On the 2nd of April, activists demanding that cannabis (marijuana) be removed from the DEA's "Schedule 1" classification marched on the White House carrying a 51 foot long mock joint. At the White House, cops claimed it was a "security threat" and it had to be carried back out. Activists then proceeded to defy the still-actve Federal ban on smoking pot on Federal government owned land. Two tickets were issued but there are no reports of actual arrests.

Ringling Brothers Circus draws protest for their animal abuse

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 04/02/2016 - 14:20

On the evening of April 1 and afternoon of April 2, animal rights activists showed up outside Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus, notorious for beating and chaining elephants, tigers, and other animals. At prior protests circus attendees have reported seeing animals beaten on-stage. This time around, protesters were emphasizing that Ringling's promise to "retire" the elephants after this year is a hoax, as the elephants are to be returned to the "Conservation for Elephant Conservation." That is Ringling's elephant training facility where most of the beatings and torture occur.

Global Zero demands nuclear security summit discuss reducing nuclear warheads to zero

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 04/01/2016 - 17:30

On the 1st of April, Global Zero staged a protest in McPherson Square complete with a full size inflatable replica of a US nuclear missile. The protest was timed for the second day of Obama's nuclear security summit that has barricaded much of the Convention Center area. The protesters called out the summit for not considering global nuclear disarmnament as a solution to the danger that a warhead will be stolen by ISIS/Daesh or some other terrorist group. There are over 15,000 warheads, and terrorists or coup governments only need one to create a humanitarian and environmental disaster worse than Hiroshima, The dangers of dirty bombs and just plain accidents were also cited as reasons to destroy this global stockpile of death.

On the 31st of March, climate activists showed up at the Japanese Embassy to demand that the Prime Minister Abe reject plans for Japanese governmental funding of the planned Batang coal burning power plant in Indonesia. 7 arrests at FERC in fracking protest

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 03/28/2016 - 00:56

On the 25th of March, seven anti-fracking protesters were arrested after blockading the driveways of FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. At first they set up in front of FERC cooking up pancakes on a solar grill, while inviting FERC to send out someone to discuss the destruction of the Holleran family's maple trees to make way for a fracked gas pipeline. When FERC ignored them, they escalated, setting up a picket line from which seven activists broke away to blockade FERC's driveway.

Code Pink blockades Trump speech at AIPAC. cops get rough, arrest one

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 03/22/2016 - 01:00

On the 21st of March, Donald Trump spoke at AIPAC along with all the other candidates except Bernie Sanders. A huge crowd jammed the area around the Verizon Center where at least Trump's speech was held. Code Pink managed to get to a strategic position limiting access to the doors and blockade it with a sit-in. The only way past was to squeeze behind the cops until cops removed other barricades to create an alternate route for the Trump supporters and other facists at AIPAC. Some of the seated blockaders were kicked-pushed and thrown by cops, one was arrested.

Tough, determined protest confronts Secret Service, marches on AIPAC

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 03/20/2016 - 19:49

On the 20th of March, a massive crowd of protesters including many from Occupied Palestine rallied at the White House before marching in force on the Convention Center, where AIPAC (American Israeli Political Affairs Comittee)was meeting. Secret Service tried to disrupt the initial rally by "closing" Penn Ave but the crowd refused to move. It was nearly an hour later that everyone finally did leave the disputed area, only to stream through the streets and confront attendees at AIPAC a few blocks away. One marcher recieved minor injuries in a confrontation with a very aggressive AIPAC attendee, but for the most part it was AIPAC that was forced onto the defensive. The protest was several times larger than the past few year's AIPAC protests and much more militant.

Two arrested in banner drop on Reagan building over Honduras coup

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 03/14/2016 - 16:12

On the 14th of March, two people were arrested after a banner was dropped inside the Ronald Reagan Building opposing the involvement of USAID in the 2009 coup in Honduras. Two of their support team were at least detained as well, security guards used a pain hold on one of them. The banner remembered Berta Caceres, an Indigenous activist murdered by the coup regime's security forces last week. USAID has an office on the Mezzanine level in the building. Security guards failed in their attempt to prevent the protest from being photographed.

Bowser's regime raids another homeless camp

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 03/10/2016 - 15:00

On the morning of March 10, Mayor Bowser's DC government declared the homeless people living in tents along the 1st st wall near Union Station to be garbage and sent the Department of Public Works to discard their belongings. Some but not all of the tent campers were offered housing, some have no place to sleep tonight. Once again those who don't make $100,000 a year can thank Mayor Bowser for her determination to prevent those who cannot afford rent from sleeping anywhere that offers overhead cover except for the very limited space in government-approved shelters.

Anacostia residents protest Congress Heights mass eviction plans

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 03/10/2016 - 14:48

On the 9th of March, Anacostia residents rallied at the Congress Heights Metro to protest continuing attempts to force out tenants at the Congress Heights apartments. The landlords there hope to illegally evict or drive away all tenants so the apartments can be razed and replaced with a larger complex of shops, offices, and luxury housing. Residents are standing their ground and refusing to leave in spite of a total maintenance cutoff and other harassment. They were supported in this protest by residents of Barry Farms, who are resisting similar displacement/gentrification plans.
