Submitted by Luke on Fri, 07/08/2016 - 19:46

On the 8th of July, Black Lives Matter protesters took to the streets for a second evening in a row. Marchers started by circling the Department of Justice several times before heading to the White House. Demands at DOJ were for Federal civil rights investigations into all of the recent wave of police shootings of young African-American males.

Black Lives Matter protesters march on Capitol, 7D police station

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 07/07/2016 - 22:13

In the wake of yet more police shootings of young African-American men, Black Lives Matter protesters took to the streets of DC in two locations. One march began at the White House and went to the Capitol, breaking through the first of two police lines set by US Capitol Police in the process. The other march began at the Congress Heights Metro station and was called "Roll Up on 7D" for their ending location at the 7D police station in Anacostia. Some mainstream media outlets reported only on the march in NW.

Donald Trump visit to Capitol Hill draws protests over racism and outsourcing

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 07/07/2016 - 14:41

On the 7th of July, Donald Trump visited GOP officials at the Capitol Hill Club near the US Capitol. Outside, protesters denounced him for racism, sexism, homophobia-and for outsourcing millions of US jobs to other countries. There was mention that the over a billion dollars he managed to lose running his own casino imply his economic performance as President would also lead to bankruptcy. Trump got in and out the back door, same way the rest of the garbage leaves the club and in this case enters. Afterwards, one GOP attendee described Trump and Speaker Paul Ryan as now being "teammates." Unless this is for public consumption, it's opposite what WTOP radio has been saying about GOP unity

GMO Protesters throw money on Senate Floor over pro-GMO labelling bill

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 07/06/2016 - 19:28

On the 6th of July, protesters opposing yet another pro-Monsanto, pro-GMO, anti-food labelling "Dark Act" bill in the Senate threw money on the Senate floor. This protest was called the "DarkActMoneyDrop, symbolizing the wholesale bribery of politicians legalized by Citizens United and used by corporations like Monsanto to control members of Congress. By comparison, nobody dared make a move for the publicly visible money thrown on the Senate floor while C-Span's cameras rolled.

Breaking: 2nd killer cop "acquitted" in Freddie Gray case

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 06/23/2016 - 13:16

On the 23ed of June, killer cop Caesar Goodson was found "not guilty" by a judge on all counts including depraved heart murder. He had refused to face a jury for his crimes, and judges are paid by the same government and businessmen as the police. Casear Goodson is the cop that drove the van recklessly, giving Freddie Gray one of Baltimore's infamous "rough rides." This led to a broken neck and the death of Freddie Gray. Caesar Goodson is the second cop to be acquited outright and the third cop the courts have refused to convict, as trial of another of these cops (the first one tried) ended in a mistrial.

Truckload of 2.8M dead bees brought to EPA in pesticide protest

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 06/22/2016 - 17:01

On the 22nd of June, beekeepers, organic farmers, and pro-Earth actvists parked a truck carrying the bodies of 2.8 million dead bees in front of the offices of the EPA. The dead bees were from 75 hives destroyed by pesticides sold by corporations like Bayer and Monsanto. On the grass between the truck and the Environmental Protection Agency's offices, speaker after speaker warned that no bees means no food. A third of all food produced in the US is either pollinated by bees or in the case of some animal products derived from such crops fed to animals.

Trump deposition draws protest by HRC morning after huge Orlando vigil in Dupont Circle

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 06/16/2016 - 19:51

On the morning of the 16th of June, appearance by Donald Trump at a DC law firm to give a deposition drew protesters from the nearby Human Rights Campaign. The previous night thousands had gathered in Dupont Circle to remember those killed by theocratic hate in Orlando, Florida. Some of them no doubt came from HRC, so when Trump showed up they were probably not inclined to tolerate his throwing more fuel on the flames of hate and religious warfare.

Code Pink disrupts Trump speech at Omni Shoreham

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 06/10/2016 - 12:48

On the 10th of June, Donald Trump spoke before the "Road to Majority" conference, an event sponsored by the allegedly faith-based far-right group Concerned Women for America. Outside, protesters called out the hypocrisy of this, given that all major religions condemn the kind of xenophobia and hate Trump is peddling. About ten minutes into Trump's speech, Code Pink activists disrupted him and were expelled by force.

Virginians Against Trump marches to Capitol against hate

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 06/06/2016 - 17:50

On the 6th of June, "Virginians Against Trump" marched from the White House to the Capitol to protest the racist candidacy of Donald Trump for president. This was a small but diverse group including supporters of both major parties united by opposition to Trump. The small size and reality that Facebook promises don't equate to turnout reminded me of the first Black Lives Matter rally for Michael Brown rally at the White House in Sumnmer 2014. There too it was apparently the organizer's first time out-but nowhere near the last.

Protest held at OAS against attacks on Venezuala in wake of Brazil coup

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 06/01/2016 - 18:57

On Tuesday, the 31st of May OAS secretary general Luis Almagro called an "emergency meeting" to discuss suspending Venezuela from the OAS. On Wednesday, the 1st of June, supporters of Venezuelan president Maduro showed up in front of the OAS's DC building calling for impeaching Almagro, the president of the OAS instead of overthrowing Venezuelan president Maduro. The two right-wing counterprotesters were outnumbered by Venezuelan citizens at the protest outraged at the OAS attacking their country and fearing a coup may be in the works.

Video-counterprotester says pro-Madura protesters "would be shot in the head"-but by own government or the planned "nonviolent coup?"

Neo-Nazis post pro-Trump flier at Union Station with Jewish caricature

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 05/26/2016 - 23:12

On the 26th of May, a neo-Nazi propaganda poster promoting Donald Trump appeared on a Metro station post at Union Station. The poster used a caricature of Jews consistant with those drawn in Nazi newspapers in Germany during the 1930's and blamed "Jew media" for "whipping up hysteria" against known racist Donald Trump. This poster is designed to resist removal, being a very difficult to remove sticker of thin paper with very tough glue and probably will leave behind permanent damage to the underlying paint.

Labor activists march into Wal-Mart, demand fired pregnant worker's job back

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 05/25/2016 - 18:34

Wal-Mart fired Arleja Stevens for pregnancy-related absences two years after agreeing never to do so. On May 25, she walked back into the H st Wal-Mart to demand her job back. She was backed by activists from Making Change at Walmart and DC Jobs with Justice. The manager objected to protesters inside the store but accepted a copy of DC laws pertaining to pregnancy and employment and agreed to meet with her in an "open door" session at 10AM on May 26, 2016. If she does not get her job back protesters will target Wal-Mart's main corporate office in DC on the 7th of June.
