On the 22nd of September, the "100 women 100 miles Pilgrimmage to the Pope" for immigrant rights arrived at McPherson Square. One hundred women had marched all the way from an ICE detention center in Pennsylvania and were joined by many more supporters on the last leg of the march inside DC. The march ended at McPherson Square, where the Catholic hunger fasters for climate action already have tents set up. The evening program featured an appearance by Sweet Honey in the Rock after the speakers finished.

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 09/21/2015 - 19:52

On the 23ed of September, five Native American activists protested at Lafayette Square in DC as Pope Francis canonized Junipero Serra, the notorious founder of California's "Indian Mission" system when CA was part of "New Spain" in the 1700's. More Native Americans protested at the Carmel-by-the-Sea mission in CA, where Serra is buried and the canonization was shown live on a big screen Jumbotron.

Two days earlier, Native American activist Louise Thundercloud gave this video interview about why Junipero Serra should not be declared a saint by the White House barricades

DC Residents protest continuing efforts to merge PEPCO, Exelon

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 09/17/2015 - 19:30

On the 17th of September, DC area residents marched on City Hall demanding that the Council and the Mayor stand firm on the city's rejection of the proposed PEPCO-Exelon merger. Exelon is known for customer service even worse than PEPCO plus a virulent opposition to net metering and solar installations. The Public Service Commission has rejected the proposed merger but Exelon has yet to give up and are asking the PSC to reconsider their decision. DC has rejected the merger on grounds that it would interfere with efforts to move PEPCO towards greater use of renewable energy, to which Exelon as proven hostile.

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 09/09/2015 - 16:05

On the 9th of September, infamous racist Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin and other far-right ideologues staged a rally on the Capitol West Lawn against the Iran nuclear deal. Some among their audience had Israeli flags, no doubt AIPAC played a role in this. Code Pink showed up and took up a position effectively corking the main entrance to the entire Trump/Cruz pro-war shinding.

Anti-racist protesters disrupt "Southern Heritage Rally," destroy Confederate flags

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 09/05/2015 - 19:43

On the 5th of September, a "Southern Heritage Rally" waving Confederate flags showed up in Upper Senate Park, just north of the US Capitol. The Capitol Police attempted to protect them from a much larger group of anti-racist protesters but were outflanked by a street march. Protesters circled the area, got around the cops, and got between the Confederate flag wavers and their cars and Metro. This set up a "Capture the Flag" match in which several Confederate flags were captured and destroyed. The racists had to run a gauntlet of protesters to escape.

Code Pink, Yemenis protest Saudi King, disrupt Saudi investment forum

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 09/05/2015 - 01:36

On the 4th of September, Saudi King Salman visited the White House. His country is waging war on the people of Yemen and flogging people for trifles. Outside the White House, Code Pink and Yemenis protested that he would have the nerve to show his face in the US. Afterwards they marched to a nearby Saudi investment forum and protested again. Medea Benjamin was dragged out of that event after managing in classic Code Pink style to get inside.

Protesters march in Baltimore as cops who killed Freddie Gray get 1st court date

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 09/03/2015 - 01:14

On the 2nd of September, the six killer cops responsible for the death of Freddie Grey faced a courtroom for their first hearing. Their defense motions to throw out the charges entirely was rejected, but the court severed the cases from each other. Thus there will be six separate cases, none hearing ALL of the evidence. This reduced the odds of convicting any of these murderers. Outside protesters marched and video has emerged of one of them being tackled and arrested by Baltimore's worst. At 6;30PM, protesters returned to the courthouse for the weekly "West Wednesday" protest organized by the family of Tyrone West. Tyrone was beaten to death by Baltimore police after a traffic stop, and no charges were filed against the cops. All of these protests have been peaceful, yet cops glowered and stood ostentatously blocking exit routes.

Mayor Bowser shouted down for proposing more cops, searches, house raids

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 08/31/2015 - 20:33

On the 27th of August, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser had the nerve to show up in Ward 8 and propose more police and more searches and house raids as the answer to rising crine. Black Lives Matter activists shouted down her denials that this would be "Stop and Frisk" in DC. She had to leave the stage under a chorus of boos as the audience resoundingly rejected her proposal for more cops, searches, and raids.

Activists deliver petitions to DOJ demanding Federal investigation of Sandra Bland's death

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 08/26/2015 - 15:57

On the 26th of August, activists delivered twelve boxes of signed petitions to the Dept of Justice demanding they take over investigation of the death in custody of Sandra Bland. Waller County, Texas officials are trying to sell their claim that her death was a suicide. On the other hand, it is a certainty that Sandra would still be alive if she had not been pulled over. Additionally, most lynchings of African-Americans have been by hanging, and Waller County has a documented history of racial discrimination.

Upon arrival a wave of protesters went over the police pens protecting the house and locked down in a hard blockade. It was 5 hours before police managed to arrest the blockaders. Supporters of Oaxaca teacher's union hold outreach near Mexican Consulate

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 08/24/2015 - 23:20

On the 24th of August, some DC area activists staged a public outreach event on 16th st about a block from the Mexican Consulate in solidarity with striking teachers in Oaxaca. Gabino Cue, governor of Oaxaca, has created a new governing body to take control of the schools anbd break the back of CNTE, one of the most militant unions in the world. This is like the Fenty/Rhee school system takeover-except that there are fears that the massive protests it has inspired by again be attacked by the Mexican army. The military has repeatedly been deployed against striking teachers in Oaxaca in the past. Back in 2006, Indymedia photographer Brad Will was shot and killed by "security" forces during a protest supporting striking teachers in Oaxaca.

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 08/18/2015 - 23:18

The 18th of August was a regional day of protest against Dominion's planned Atlantic Coast fracked gas pipeline. Friends of Nelson County called for solidarity actions in communities along the route or otherwise effected by Dominion's fracked gas projects. One of these projects is the conversion of the old Cove Point LNG(liquified natural gas) import terminal to a greatly enlarged export terminal. Thus, one of the protests was held by We Are Cove Point on the beach by Cove Point lighthouse, with the old gas dock in the backdrop behind local homeowners and their allies from around the area.
