Activists protest and flier at World Bank sponsored greenwash concert

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 04/18/2015 - 19:52

On the 18th of April, the World Bank Group staged the "Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day" concert, with Fallout boy headlining. This concert was during their Spring Meetings, and in spite of an increase in overall World Bank investments in fossil fuels. Global justice activists set up in front of the main bag search checkpoint and some went inside to hand out hundreds of fliers contrasting the message of the show with the World Bank Group's actual record.

Fracked gas export protesters dragged out of FERC meeting-again

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 04/17/2015 - 13:35

On the 16th of April, new FERC commissioner Norman Bay got a taste of vehement opposition to his agency's record of rubberstamping fracking related projects. She tried to brush off protests by Calvert County residents and their supporters opposing Dominion's fracked gas export facility now under construction at Cove Point. On of the protesters lampooned the previous FERC director saying "Oh my God, we have a situation here. The situation is not going away," continuing "There is no democracy here. You just ignore what I write on my computer." This in reference to similar remarks by the last commissioner of FERC.

Tough talk at anti-TPP union rally on Capitol Hill

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 04/15/2015 - 17:51

On the 15th of April, large numbers of union supporters gathered on Capitol Hill oppose the proposed TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership. They called this "another NAFTA," and even used the term "SHAFTA" for the trade deals that have been offshoring US jobs and led to plummeting wages since 1994. Multiple members of Congress as well as union officials had some unusually tough talk against the "fast track" bill for the TPP. Fast track means a quick ratification vote with no debate if a treaty is signed, for a treaty whose very text is being kept secret.

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 04/13/2015 - 16:10

Unable to execute political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal, prison authorities have instead been trying to kill him by neglect. For three months he showed signs of diabetes and treatment was refused until he was finally taken to an outside hospital and fainted with blood sugar at seven times the normal level. On Friday, the 10th of April, supporters protested all over the US demanding compassionate release for Mumia. Here in DC, supporters of Mumia marched on the US Dept of Justice

Protesters show at at Patriot Center Ringlings circus performance

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 04/11/2015 - 22:26

On the evening of April 11th, the protesters who have dogged appearances of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey circus showed up at George Mason University's Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Attendance at the circus was down. Protesters suspect Ringling's announcement that the elephants are going to be retired is due to shrinking attendance. All the animals, elephants included, were on stage at the Patriot Center. Outside, an unknown large man opposing the protest tried and failed to intimidate a woman out of distributing leaflets. A second protester intervened and that man decided to back away.

Hundreds ride to cherry blossoms in first DC Bike Party of 2015

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 04/09/2015 - 00:19

On the 8th of April, hundreds of DC area cyclists gathered in spotty rain for the first of the year's DC Bike Parties. They leave Dupont Circle at 8PM on the second Wednesday of each of the warmer months of the year. This one was the Cherry Blossom Chase, and rode to the Hained Point loop, under newly opened cherry blossoms. Just before the ride began the rain tapered off to nothing more than drizzle, nowhere near enough to dampen the spirits of hundreds of riders on the first Bike Party of the year

DC Residents protest gentrification at Mayor's State of the District Address

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 03/31/2015 - 23:00

On the last day of March, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser held her "state of the district" address. Outside were scores of DC residents excluded from the event-and apparently excluded from the Mayor's promises about affordable housing. There was even talk of housing that someone with a $75,000 a year income can afford being defined as "affordable." The "Real State of the District" protesters beseiged the Lincoln Theater where the Mayor was speaking and at one point took to the streets to blockade 13th and U sts. A key slogan was "Black Homes Matter!"

March on Mexican Embassy remembers Ayotzinapa 43

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 03/26/2015 - 21:43

On the 26th of March, Members of the #Ayotzi43DC protested in front of the US Dept of State demanding a cutoff of US funds to Mexican military units involved in human rights violations. The rally was followed by a march on the Mexican Embassy. Six months ago to the day, Mexican police and military opened fire on a bus carrying 43 teaching students in Ayotzinapa and they have not been seen since. It is widely suspected that after police ambushed and fired on their bus the survivers were turned over to cartel gunmen to be killed and there is evidence their bodies may have been incinerated.

Fundraiser for pro-TPP Sen Wyden derailed by anti fast track protest

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 03/24/2015 - 23:03

On the 24th of March, Sen Wyden, leading Democrat of the Senate Finance Committee, had scheduled a fundraiser at the Bistro Bis restaurant in the same building as the Hotel George. The fundraiser was cancelled after he got word that protesters against his support for "fast-track," no amendment voting on the proposed TPP trade deal were also going to be there. Protesters showed up anyway as a precaution against being faked out and to educate passers by on the bribery that takes place at these fundraisers.

Greenpeace protests to demand a NO decision on Arctic drilling by Obama

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 03/24/2015 - 14:39

On the 24th of March, Greenpeace staged a protest in front of the White House to demand that Obama reject any expansion of oil drilling in the Arctic. This protest was held as Obama's decision could now come at any time. Like the Keystone KX, this decision pits the survival of Indigenous people and untold numbers of animal species against the profits of hugely rich multinational oil companies.

3-19:War protests all over DC plus TPP and Cove Point protests

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 03/19/2015 - 20:47

The 19th of March marked the 12th anniversary of the first day of George W Bush's invasion. The day the war began, protesters in DC blocked Key Bridge in a combined foot-bike operation. There have been protests on that day most years since, and 2015 was no exception. With war and dirty trade deals again leading threats, protests popped up all over DC. One of them, the "Spring Rising" bus tour of warmongers, ran into significant police harassment at the Pentagon.

DC Ferguson packs Council oversight hearing on MPD to oppose jumpouts

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 03/10/2015 - 13:20

On the 10th of March, DC Ferguson activists packed a DC Council Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on MPD. They were there to demand nothing less than a complete end to "jump-out" police tactics that terrorize communities of color in DC. Former cops testified that their training justified any and all police shootings, and someone named Trayvon White said cops are even conducting cavity searches during those jump-outs. A jump-out is when cops swarm out of unmarked cars with the intent of initimidating someone into consent to a search.

Multiple arrests as protesters blockade, enter AIPAC Convention

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 03/01/2015 - 18:45

On the 1st of March, several protesters were arrested while blocking a door of the Washington Convention Center during the start of the convention of AIPAC, the "American Israel Public Affairs Committee." At first conventiongoers bypassed the blockade by other doors, leading to a determined attempt tp get into the building. Some protesters managed to sneak in while others tried to re-establish the door blockade on the inside of the doors. They were dragged outside by cops, who the conceded the top of the steps to protesters. Finally several protesters were arrested while blocking a door open so the sounds of the protest could be heard more clearly from inside.
