Two arrested in torture protest at Dick Cheney's house

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 01/10/2015 - 20:20

Early AM on Saturday, Jan 10, Code Pink and other activists gathered at Frying Pan National Park in Herndon, Va for the Torture Tour. Protesters stopped at the homes of CIA chief John Brennan and of former vice President Dick Cheney, both notorious war criminals. Tigh Barry was arrested at Cheney's house-while dressed as Cheney himself! A second arrest was also reported, apparently this began as an attempt to put Cheney under citizen's arrest on war crimes charges. Afterwards, the remaining protesters headed to CIA headquarters for a vigil against torture and drone strikes.

Code Pink disrupts GOP party celebrating takeover of Congress

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 01/06/2015 - 23:22

On the 6th of January, Code Pink lampooned and significantly disrupted a GOP dinner celebrating their takeover of both houses of Congress staged by the " Republican Jewish Coalition." Jewish members of Code Pink called that group out for not representing them as Jews and favoring Israel over the values of their own religion. Senator Sheldon Adelson, a casino billionaire with a reputation for bribery and money laundering was one of the scheduled guests. Another was Dick Cheney. Code Pink caught Karl Rove and Sen McCain at the door and made them run a gauntlet of protesters.

Die-In protest at Wheaton Plaza against killer cops, two snatch squad arrests after

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 01/01/2015 - 17:22

On New Year's Day 2015, civil rights activists held a die-in at Wheaton Plaza protesting the continuing police violence and murder against African-Americans. Police have shot two DC residents just in the past couple weeks, and have even shot at protesters in Ferguson. Black lives still matter, and until the cops get that straight organizers warn these protests can pop up anytime, anywhere.

Native Americans, allies march on Washington Football Team, demand racist name be changed

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 12/28/2014 - 17:00

On the 28th of December, Native Americans and allies from many communities marched on the final home game of the Washington Football Team. The demand was simple: that the team change their racist name and mascot. The name originated as a reference to bounties paid to mercenaries and vigilantes for the scalps of murdered Native American men, women, and children. At one point the bounty reached $200-in 1800's dollars. To this day it is still deemed "culturally acceptable" to treat Indigenous people as "unpersons," according to multiple rally speakers. Thus, this is the one time the use of racist names and mascots in sports is still widely accepted.

Hands Up Coalition DC defies NY Mayor's demand for protest moratorium

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 12/22/2014 - 20:24

On the 22nd of December, Hands Up Coalition DC gathered outside the US Dept of Justice to announce that there would be no moratorium on protests against killer cops. NY Mayor DeBlasio has attempted to demand such a moratorium, but protesters are telling him he can have it any time he wants by imposing a moratoriom on cops shooting, choking, and otherwise killing people. One woman said she wanted the DOJ and the White House to show the same concern for "our children" who are being gunned down by the police as for the police who were killed, and only then could there be a moratorium.

Civil Rights protesters block DC 295, march through Anacostia

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 12/19/2014 - 20:48

On the 19th of December, on 4 hours notice, civil rights protesters assembled in Anacostia, marched onto the 11th St Bridge, and held traffic. From there they marched onto DC 295 and blockaded traffic, though not holding any one line of cars directly for more than a few minutes. The cops themselves blocked traffic far longer, but the entire freeway action was deliberately limited to one hour. Local participants were nervous about mass arrests, so organizers reminded everyone of DC's "3 warning" law for arresting protesters.

After the blockade ended, protesters marched back into Anacostia and up Good Hope Road, bound for a 7PM youth summit to discuss next steps. Although in the streets, this march was structured as an educational event, and every effort was made to get cheering bystanders to join the march

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 12/17/2014 - 23:32

On the 17th of December, new video footage emerged from the "after-march" following Al Sharpton's massive civil rights march on Saturday, Dec 13. The Secret Service was filmed trying to force civil rights protesters from the sidewalk in front of the White House, only to throw in the towel when protesters stood their ground. In later footage the US Capitol Police refuse to permit Ferguson protesters to get anywhere near the Capitol during the night march, even though there is almost no traffic there.

Police chief complains that Ferguson protests remove cops from neighborhoods

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 12/16/2014 - 14:03

On the 16th of December, DC police chief Cathy Lanier appeared on NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt, and complained that the DC Ferguson protests are "very expensive" to MPD, requiring up to 400 cops a night to be detailed to them. She specifially complained that the protests are "a strain on the department" and reduce their ability to "police the neighborhoods.

Well, fewer cops in neighborhoods has to lead to less ability to harass residents and to fewer jump-outs, which are DC's version of Stop and Frisk. Although DC cops have actually become more violent in the neighborhoods since the protests began, if there are fewer cops to carry out this violence the protests may be achieving one of their goals by directly keeping the cops busy elsewhere

Police threaten illegal arrests after DC Ferguson blocks Chinatown, 395 tunnel

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 12/16/2014 - 00:26

On the 15th of December, DC Ferguson civil rights protesters asssembled in Chinatown for the nightly round of street blockades. This time one of the targets was I-395 and NY Ave. For the second night in a row police attempted to bypass the legally required "3 warning" rule for mass arrests. This time they tried to say that warnings given at the 395 tunnel were still valid in Chinatown and could be counted against the required three warnings. They tried to go straight to the 3ed warning and got out zip ties, something not previously seen at these protests. Finally someone got police chief Lanier on the line, she said three new warnings were required at every intersection so the cops were thwarted in their hoped-for arrests.

Family of Trey Joyner, shot by US Park Police, speaks out at DOJ protest

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 12/16/2014 - 00:25

On the 15th of December the Hands Up Coalition held a rally in front of the Department of Justice demanding that killer cops be prosecuted and police departments be placed under community control. The mother of Trey Joyner, a DC man shot and killed by US Park Police, spoke about her case and how there has been no justice in the courts for her son or her family. He was killed because of a false report from "an informant" of a man with a gun, he was unarmed. Every 28 hours police kill another African-American in the US, protesters warn that unless this is stopped they will continue to "shut shit down."

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 12/14/2014 - 23:08

On the 14th of December, civil rights protesters stormed into the Wal-Mart on H st for the 4th time. This time they stood their ground, and soon the cash registers were shut down. Some of the shoppers joined the protest. One of the cops or security guards claimed protesters would be arrested after ONE warning, not the three required by DC law. After a tense ten minutes and call by protesters for reinforcements, the activists exited the store and no arrests were reported.
