Puerto Rico Religious Leaders Criticize Debt Plans and Negotiations

Puerto Rico's Catholic Archbishop and an Evangelical leader who heads the island's bible society criticized a debt agreement and ongoing debt negotiations. "We are strongly opposed to the COFINA debt deal," wrote the religious leaders in a statement referencing a recently approved plan on a type of debt backed by sales taxes. The plan was approved by Puerto Rico's government and oversight board and covers about $17 billion of the total $72 billion debt of the US Territory.

September 15th marks the ten-year anniversary of the Lehman Brothers investment firm collapse, symbolizing the onset of the 2008 global financial crisis.

"The financial crisis drove 100 million people, mostly women and children, into extreme poverty around the world," noted Eric LeCompte, the head of the religious development group Jubilee USA. "Too many around the world are still feeling the effects of the last crisis and we are not prepared to stop the next crisis."

The leaflets call out the clear and present danger Brett Kavenaugh poses to everything from worker's wages to a woman's right to choose.

On the 12th of August, WMATA broke their promise to ATU Local 689 by running a special train just for a few dozen Nazis from the Vienna Metro to Foggy Bottom. Once there, the fascists had to run a gauntlet of thousands of counterprotesters, nearly get kettled by counterprotesters at Lafayette Sq, and when the rains began to fall had to be removed by a different route from the park to return to Metro.Counterprotesters were incensed that neo-Nazis would dare to commemorate August 12, the day one of them murdered Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, VA.

Over 20 State Attorneys General Call for Shell Company Transparency

24 State Attorneys General wrote to Congress supporting action to disclose the actual owner of a shell company to law enforcement. "Anonymous" shell companies can be used to hide the identity of the owner.

"Shell companies are used by corrupt government officials to steal money from their people and hide the identities of people involved in the modern day human slave trade," stated Jubilee USA Executive Director Eric LeCompte who serves on United Nations financial expert groups.

The US Treasury is calling for greater scrutiny into the use of "anonymous" shell companies. Last week, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin urged Congress to quickly pass legislation to make the identity of shell company owners available to law enforcement.

The US Senate voted for Puerto Rico disaster relief in the form of food assistance with the passage of the "Farm Bill." The Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018, included Senators Marco Rubio and Kirsten Gillibrand's amendment to fund Puerto Rico's Nutritional Assistance Program.
