Sex workers, allies rally for decrim bill and against SESTA/FOSTA

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 06/02/2018 - 23:24

On the 2nd of June, sex workers and their allies rallied in Ward 6, home of DC Councilmember Charles Allen. Allen will decide the fate of a bill introduced by Councilmember David Grosso to decriminalize sex work in DC. The closure of sites like Backpage.com in the wake of the SESTA/FOSTA bills has created a crisis, with many sex workers becoming homeless as there is less money to be made working the streets as well as much greater risk.

DC Council Candidates condemn Stop and Frisk, racist policing at ACLU candidate's forum

Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 05/31/2018 - 01:35

On the 30th of May, the ACLU hosted the #ReformDCJustice candidate's forum for DC Council Chair and at-large candidates. Two at-large candidates seeking to unseat Anita Bonds were present, Anita Bonds was a no-show. The ACLU, Black Lives Matter, and No Justice No Pride would have been a tough audience for a councilmember known to answer to big buisness and gentrifiers, and who attended Trump's inauguration. Issues from Stop and Frisk to sex work to Amazon's efforts to invade DC came up during the forum.

Mayday reportback for DC and elsewhere

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 05/02/2018 - 02:42

On the 1st of May, DC's annual Mayday march proceeded from Columbia Heights to Malcolm X Park. Expected fascist counterprotesters were a no-show and the entire event was uneventful and mostly family-friendly. It was announced during the DC march that at that time (noon Pacific time) every West Coast port was shut down, and marchers in Milwaulkee descended of the offices of the sheriff over his decision to join ICE's 287(g) program. In Seattle, marchers descended on ICE. The Proud Boys showed up for a countermarch there but abandoned the field after maybe half an hour. In Portland, Oregon police cars were damaged, and a major battle between police and anarchists was fought in Paris.

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 04/25/2018 - 19:12

On the 25th of April, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Trump's Muslim Ban case as protesters gathered outside. A Japanese-American speaker warned of the ugly precent set by the 1944 Supreme Court Korematsu_v._United_States case. In that case, the Supreme Court upheld the wholesale mass incarceration of Japanese-Americans during WWII. If the Supreme court overturns the Muslim Ban, Trump will suffer s serious strategic defeat, the loss of a core campaign promise.

Another round of solidarity posters for the J20 defendents has appeared around DC, this time showing Donald Trump aiming a pistol at the viewer and warning of literal Trumped-up charges.
