Solidarity protest held for J20 defendents at DC Superior Court

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 11/27/2017 - 17:40

On the 27th of November, a protest was held outside DC Superior Court in soiidarity with J20 (Inauguration protest) defendents facing up to 65 years in prison. One message of the protest was that "a vote to convict is a vote for Trump" driven home by a chant. It has also come out that police already had decided to carry out the mass arrest prior to the march ever leaving Logan Circle.

FCC to end net neutrality,DC protests coming Dec 7 at Verizon stores

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 11/22/2017 - 14:24

FCC Chairman Agit Pai has announced plans to revoke net neutrality protections as early as December this year. Once this takes place, ISP's will be able to block popular websites unless people pay for "social upgrades," "media upgrades," "entertainment upgrades," etc. With Cable TV subscriptions plummeting, Big Cable and Big Telcos are keen to apply that business model to the Internet. As usual, Tor will defeat their blocking.

Protests at Verizon stores will begin on Dec 7, including two stores here in DC

NPI exiled to barn, shut down early after losing Ronald Reagan building

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 11/20/2017 - 00:32

On Nov 19, 2016, Richard Spencer's "National Policy Institue" (NPI) met in the Ronald Reagan building in DC, throwing Nazi salutes while maybe 1,000 protesters beseiged the building. One year later, on Nov 19, 2017 they had to meet in a barn after the Ronald Reagan building dumped them, and it appears far fewer attended. Recent bounced checks by Richard Spencer probably made hotels unavailable.

Update Nov 20,2017:The barn that hosted NPI has been identified as Rocklands Farm in Poolesville, MD. It appears to be a rustic host site for weddings etc and was rented under false pretences. NPI was ordered to leave as soon as the owners realized they had Nazis on their property

"Tax Prom" with Mike Pence draws Tax March Chicken, protesters

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 11/16/2017 - 23:11

The evening of Nov 16 featured a pro-GOP tax plan "Tax Prom" staring theocratic VP Mike Pence, $2,500 VIP tickets-and some uninvited guests making plenty of noise outside. The Tax March Chicken and Corruption Cleanup were in attendance, the former a reference to the refusal of Donald Trump to release his tax returns while peddling a tax "reform" bill to jack up middle class taxes and cut taxes on the rich.

Reportback and video from Catharsis DC "Temple Burn"

Submitted by Luke on Sun, 11/12/2017 - 16:26

On the 11th of November, Catharis DC staged their "Temple Burn" bonfire on the Mall. As always, the bonfire was preceded by a spectacular fire ceremony. Again the NPS limited the size of the bonfire, and this year NPS also banned one of the art installations, a 40+ foot sculpture of a nude woman. This was replaced by a smaller but similar projection installation.

Students take over Hart Building in protest for clean DREAM act

Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 11/09/2017 - 14:46

On the 9th of November, an estimated 1,000 students walked out of DC schools and swarmed the Hart Senate Office Building for a loud protest demanding that a DREAM act be passed. Such a bill would protect young migrants brought here as children from being rounded up at deported, in some cases to countries they've never even seen. Protesters linked the Atrium galleries and dropped banners, demanding a clean bill with no provisions harming other migrants or border communities. At least one arrest was reported.

Video:defend J20 Resistance

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 11/08/2017 - 15:48

1st bloc of trials: Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 8:30am – Trial begins at 9:30am

H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, 500 Indiana Ave NW, Washington, DC

On January 20th, 200+ protesters were mass-arrested, detained, and now face 6 decades in prison. Their cell phones were confiscated and searched, their homes were raided, and their social media data was seized. The US Attorney’s Office is setting a repressive precedent for political expression under Donald Trump’s administration. It is incumbent upon anyone who values dissent to stand in solidarity with the defendents in this case.

Trump tax plan draws protests, bill not published by self-imposed deadline

Submitted by Luke on Wed, 11/01/2017 - 14:45

Donald Trump's tax "reform" bill to cut taxes on the wealthy and partially pay for them with tax hikes on the middle class was not released by its original self-imposed Nov 1 deadline, probably due to dissention preventing agreement on a bill. Meanwhile, protesters gathered on Capitol Hill and a billboard truck set up next to Trump Hotel to oppose the plan whatever form it finally takes.

J20 Defendant—Dane Powell—Is Coming Home. Donate To His Post Release Fund

Submitted by Luke on Tue, 10/24/2017 - 14:23

We are so thrilled about his release. It is a day to celebrate, but we must be mindful, too, of the post-release challenges that await Dane, and offer our help, whenever, however, and wherever we can. Rebuilding his life (under probation restrictions and release conditions) is no small thing. Folks who know Dane personally will realize how different the life he will be required to live over the next two years on probation will be from the life he envisioned for himself—in the short term, at least.

DC Reinvest rallies at Wilson Building demanding DC Government cut ties with racist Wells Fargo

Submitted by Luke on Mon, 10/23/2017 - 16:39

On the 23ed of October, DC reinvest protested at the Wilson Building, demanding that the city government remove all its accounts and business from Wells Fargo. A resolution has been introduced in the council to divest, and activists are focussing pressure on councilmember Jack Evans to get it brought to a vote. Wells Fargo's failing community reinvestment score triggers an existing DC law forbidding the city's business relationship with this notorious and predatory bank.

Marchers for Puerto Rico condemn Trump's paper towel toss, lack of aid

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 10/19/2017 - 13:23

On the 18th of October, Puerto Ricans and supporters marched from the US Capitol to FEMA, demanding the Federal government provide aid for a community where power is still out, food and clean water are hard to get, and the impacts of Hurricane Maria are still largely unabated. One marcher from Silver Spring was quoted by the Washington Post as being especially incensed by Donald Trump's tossing of paper towels during his visit to the island, as though the ravages of the hurricane could be simply wiped up.
