Over 160 arrests as Supreme Court hears case to decide legality of firing GLBTQ employees

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 10/08/2019 - 21:44

On the 8th of October, the US Supreme Court heard arguments in two GLBTQ discrimination/ Title VII cases. One concerns whether firing transgender employees violates the Civil Rights Act's Title VII sex discrimination provisions. The other concerns whether firing men for dating men but not firing women for dating women constitutes sex discrimination under the same law. A huge crowd of protesters gathered outside. Police efforts to pre-empt a civil disobedience failed when that portion of the protesters arrived late due to a highway traffic jam.

Anniversary of Kashoggi's dismemberment murder earns day of protest at Saudi Embassy

Submitted by Luke on Thu, 10/03/2019 - 00:53

The 2nd of October was the anniversary of the brutal murder and dismemberment of Saudi/Washington Post journalist Jamal Kashoggi in a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Once in daytime and a second time after dark, protesters showed up at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia demanding that Crown Prince Mohommad Bin Salman be held responsible for this crime. Trump has done nothing to condemn this crime, no doubt wishing he too could butcher unfriendly journalists.

Submitted by Luke on Sat, 09/28/2019 - 20:19

On the 28th of September the National Transgender Visibility March took to the streets, taking up several blocks at a time on Penn Ave. A smattering of pro-Trump counterprotesters from the tiny and probably failed "Mother of All Rallies" were hugely outnumbered by what appeared to be the largest transgender march in DC so far.

Submitted by Luke on Fri, 09/13/2019 - 19:32

On the 13th of September, an anti-migrant hate rally (some participants in MAGA hats) in front of the Montgomery County Council's offices drew a much larger counterprotest. The hate rally was demanding Montgomery County hold jail inmates for ICE detainers, which is not the current practice. The hypocrisy of the far-right was on full display, as they defied police orders to stay off the steps of the building.
